Anything worth buying in NYC?

Got vitamins and Melatonin on my list but any must have beauty or clothes shops worth visiting?

I was wondering about Ralph Lauren, JCrew and Gant?

Thanks in advance

Exchange rate is so shocking at the moment I doubt there’s any bargains. When I was in NYC at the back end of 2019 I was quite shocked how expensive drug store items were (exchange rate was £1 for $1.24). Having said that I bought a few bits from Sephora which at the time were not available in UK - but now they are!

TokenTaquila · 08/03/2023 17:12

Thanks @VanCleefArpels I feared as much.

I was there last week and concur that I found the prices astronomical

bookish83 · 08/03/2023 17:17

Snacks from whole foods or trader joes
Everlane
Anything beauty wise you cannot buy here
Crest white strips
Lululemon
Stanley cup or a yeti cup for drinks

Not expecting these to be cheap as such but more things you cant really get here!

Mercurial123 · 08/03/2023 17:17

Trader Joe's sunscreen is a dupe of Supergoop and a fraction of the price. It was so popular they were limiting the number you could buy as people were reselling on EBay at inflated prices.

Short of a flat in Manhattan, no, not really.

Mercurial123 · 08/03/2023 17:18

J Crew will always be cheaper in the US and they always seem to have a sale.

Rebel2 · 08/03/2023 17:19

Tree hut scrubs! If you like a properly scrubby body scrub

Poor exchange rate plus nyc city tax on purchases, items cheaper here unless its something special....i went once when exchange was $2 to the pound and got nice levi jeans and jackets at flea markets, but sister recently went and said everything is super expensive there now and hard to get small sizes, maybe try outlet malls in new jersey...thrift stores up state were good..westchester county. you can get a bus and it goes up via bronx so see some sights also.

windmill26 · 08/03/2023 17:42

We are going to L.A. soon and I have a loose wish-list.
Crest whitening strips and toothpaste, melatonin, some clothes or shoes that catch my eye . I will pop in J.Crew ,Everlane ,Saks and some consignment boutiques...I don't have anything in mind or expectations but I may get lucky with a special piece (or two😉).

ForSaleChesterDraws · 08/03/2023 17:58

Went in October and everything was astronomical. $18 for cerave moisturiser in CVS! Even American brands such as Fenty (foundation $44+ tax when is paid £28 on offer in Boots) and Kate Somerville were cheaper at home. There is a Manhattan tax, essentials are cheaper in the boroughs.

GulfCoastBeachGirl · 08/03/2023 18:09

Google "outlet shopping near new York city" and you should get a list that will include outlets in Staten Island, etc. Depends on whether or not you want to allocate an afternoon of your time to shopping, but there are bargains to be had.

Shitfather · 08/03/2023 18:21

Check out sample sales. I didn’t bother shopping for anything back in 2019 other than candy cane.

TokenTaquila · 08/03/2023 18:23

Thanks everyone.
I’ve only got half a day spare to shop so an outlet is unrealistic.
Will visit JCrew and LuluLemon but it seems that I’ll spend my dollars on food!

There's a jewellers in Brooklyn called CatBird NYC, which I only sadly discovered after our NYC trip. They're on Insta, may be your thing.

AlicesPalace · 08/03/2023 22:30

@TokenTaquila can I ask what vitamins you are getting? I’m off to the states soon too.

also what’s with the crest whitening strips?

mickeysmug · 09/03/2023 06:30

Advil PM and Excedrine but as others have said, it’s expensive.

I couldn’t find a Stanley cup there 2 weeks ago but did buy a couple of Reduce cups and extra straws. They’ve been worth it so far and are used every day.

I didn’t particularly like Target in NYC. Mostly looked like they’d been robbed.

If you want souvenirs such as a fridge magnet or key ring then the Manhattan end of the Brooklyn Bridge is where to go. You need a few dollars in your pocket.

Re food, our DS struggled one day and was starving and cold. We stopped for lunch. 3 main courses, 2 cokes and 4 beers was $190 including tip. All we had was fish and chips and DH a chicken sandwich. Gallaghers $29 lunch special is worth every penny.

Macy’s is massive. Pandora was 3/2 if you like the jewellery when we were there.

OatMilkLattes · 09/03/2023 15:24

I live in NYC and no. There is nothing apart from the things you can’t get in the U.K. (melatonin/whitening strips etc) that is worth it is so ridiculously expensive and it drives me mad!

Also re food it is ridiculously expensive, we went for nibbles and 2 small glasses of wine last night and it came to $80 with tip. You can do cheaper - sweet green/whole foods for lunch isn’t too bad (I know not exactly glamorous but healthy and reasonable-ish!). You can also get good pizza that is cheap all over the place if you need a snack etc.

Zoetrope1 · 09/03/2023 15:31

Trader Joe’s sunscreen (if you’re lucky enough to find it) and everything but the bagel seasoning

Mociun is my favourite jeweller in NY, she’s based in Brooklyn

Have fun!

MissDollyMix · 09/03/2023 15:32

We went last year when the exchange rate was slightly better than it is now and it was still super expensive. We even visited some of the outlet malls but they were still more expensive than the equivalent back in the U.K. I stocked up on melatonin (although it’s actually cheaper to import that from piping rock), crest white strips and crunchy Cheetos!! The kids loved browsing the cereal aisle of the supermarket and choosing some lurid cereals to bring home 😂
