Indie style/charity shop vibe

I've realised lately that I am pretty happy wearing things like graphic t-shirts, jeans and DMs. I also like clashing patterns, like a check sweater vest over a swirly shirt with cords. I'm channelling Duckie Dale from Pretty in Pink, or maybe Gonzo from the Muppets? I don't really do traditionally feminine fashion very well, and anything too pretty or floaty or ruffled looks very strange on me.

I just thought I'd start a thread for other people who like this vibe and share any excellent finds or tips or Instagram accounts to follow.

Hello! I’m not into the same style as you (I’m into goth, witchy, foresty aesthetics) but your style sounds quite eyecatching and interesting.

My local chazza shop has a neon pink chunky cardie in it which sounds like the kind of thing you might be into, I’ll try and get a snap of it.

Is there a type of graphic T in particular you like? I knew a girl who had a collection of vintage American college sports team T-shirts, and I’m a fan of horror T shirts.

theoldhasgone · 05/03/2023 10:52

Hi! Your style sounds like something I would love to be able to pull off!

My current fave tshirts are a Wonder Woman t-shirt like this amzn.eu/d/0VIXGtp and a Spiderman t-shirt like this amzn.eu/d/f0HLceZ. I also like slogan t-shirts but I struggle to find ones that aren't a bit saccharine. I do like this one from M&S - www.marksandspencer.com/ie/pure-cotton-slogan-crew-neck-t-shirt/p/clp60582530#intid=plpnav_pid_pg1pip15g2r4c2

I'm really enjoying trying to buy more second-hand clothes as I enjoy the hunt :)

Sometimes I put together an outfit I think will look cute but end up looking full children's TV presenter so dial it back a notch or ten.

@theoldhasgone you might find that it’s worth taking a look in TK Maxx in the designer section as they had some Markus Lumpfer jumpers in the clearance section that is in a similar vein to the one you have posted in terms of having sequins on, if memory serves.

I am not sure if I have an aesthetic as such as it depends on what I am influenced by but I like the sound of your style.

Mabelface · 05/03/2023 12:04

This is me, with added checked shirts, dungarees, pinafore dresses and headscarves. Anything marvel is perfect, particularly wonder woman.

Floisme · 05/03/2023 12:11

It's not my daily style but I do like jeans, a graphic T shirt and a men's suit jacket.
When my son was a teenager, I used to pick out T shirts for him that I could pounce on when he grew out of them, but unfortunately I can't do that any more. I like the sound of clashy patterns. (I also loved Ducky Dale.)

Soccermumamir · 05/03/2023 12:32

Hi,
I'm the same. I've tried wearing smock dresses, but I think I look weird lol I have 2 in my wardrobe that I barely wear. I love jeans, t shirts, white trainers and obsessed with my DMs. I like wearing skirts with t shirts, or floaty tops tucked in etc. But I wouldn't say I'm a girly girl, I'm definitely a tom boy. Always have been and always will be by the looks of it lol 😆

Yeah this is similar to me as well. Love a checked shirt. Have 3 of them lol

theoldhasgone · 05/03/2023 12:37

Interesting - do those of you wearing checked shirts mean like lumberjack check? I'd think that kind of checked shirt would be that bit toooo blokey on me, but might have to give them a try.

I did discover shirts in general in a big way last year but I prefer plain black, houndstooth and stripes. White shirts make me look like a waiter.

Some of my checked shirts are men's. I don't differentiate between men's or women's, I just wear what I like. My current favorite is a red and black men's check shirt in large. Worn with jeans, docs and a tee-shirt.

Howtohideasausage · 05/03/2023 12:46

I’m wearing (today), bright red Lucy and Yak Alexa trousers, a rainbow striped long sleeved t shirt and a chunky green mohair cardigan and doc martins. I like the sound of your style. Intrigued by witchy Forest look too, I wonder if it’s as I imagine.
Don’t have any IG accounts to recommend though.

WH52 · 05/03/2023 13:59

I’ve always found Pull & Bear good for quirky graphic T shirts!

theoldhasgone · 05/03/2023 15:32

Nice to have some fellow travellers here and thanks for the recommendations for Markus Lupfur and Pull And Bear!

I found a few higher end brands that I try and stalk occasionally on ebay because they often have bold designs I like: Orwell Austen, Antoni and Alison, Equipment Femme.

I also like some Joanie, Sugarhill Brighton and Run and Fly, although a lot of their stuff is a bit too bright and quirky for me.

I have found it quite hard to figure out what I like and what looks good over the years. I had my colours and style done a while ago which was SO helpful but I realised a couple of years ago that I was sticking to very safe clothes and trying to look 'nice' all the time so I started to experiment more. I do follow a lot of the advice about colours and necklines etc still helps me figure out why certain shapes/trends are flattering on me or not.

Ah I like a lot of the stuff that you like too! I really miss thifting in the US. I love all the naff vintage t-shirts - they are usually a really good quality cotton too. I have some sports ones (Golden State Warriors and Denver Broncos) and just totally random ones (Ohio state fair 1998). Plus lots of random indie bands. I think vintage/charity shows are the best place. I also recommend looking at the mens section. I often wear my husband's checked shirts, but not often with jeans (as too lumberjack). I wear them with leather leggings or wool trousers instead.

I have three similar to this one 🙂 Love them with jeans, plain t shirt, white trainers of DMs.

I’m similar style! Except I really love 70s style florals lately too, have a couple of nice tunic style tops. Picked up this amazing jacket in a charity shop recently. I live in my DMs, jeans and colourful jumpers or vintage dresses. I do like Monki for my work wardrobe.

I would love to be able to pull off that look. I really wouldn't suit me - I'm more buttoned up than that!

We are very lucky to live in a UK town with many many charity shops, so it is easy to thrift here.

I don't tend to try the mens section as I'm not small of breast or buttock! But sometimes look there for jumpers.

That is an amaaaaazing jacket!

I didn't know the Monki brand but it looks great, thanks for that.

I love the look that you are describing… alas my 34GG breasts look really bad in vintage print t shirts!

Mabelface · 07/03/2023 11:23

Luna, you're the same size bust as me and I wear them. 😉

theoldhasgone · 07/03/2023 13:15

I'm also something like 36F and wear graphic/slogan tshirts. The key I find is to get the right size and shape of graphic/slogan. I look much better in full body square/rectangle graphics than ones that just sit across the boobs. Also no circular/wavy/wobbly patterns. It took a bit of practice to figure out what would work.

I am a goth with a now and again hint of rockabilly. I like the usual goth brands plus I shop on vinted for bargains. Killstar is expensive so I always wait for the sales! I always take tips: and recommendations for unusual new clothing websites and shops!
