Black dress for a funeral

Pigtailsandall · 04/03/2023 19:47

I feel like I've started my fair share of threads this week so apologies!
I have a funeral on Monday - just found out today, and I have 3 black dresses and none of them are suitable for a funeral (LB cocktail dress, denim dress and maxi beach dress). So need to go shopping tomorrow. I have limited time and I'll go to Westfield in Shepherd's Bush to hit as many shops as poss, but any ideas what/where to target?

The dress must be fairly conservative, long sleeved (as it's cold) and hopefully versatile enough to wear after for work/going out etc. I have to be able to wear it with boots. I'm currently thinking a fine knitted dress, but unsure if its formal enough, or a shirt dress?
Help!

Oops, you said long sleeves!

LarkRize · 04/03/2023 19:59

This is on sale - MintVelvet - Dress

…or this…Dress

CC4712 · 04/03/2023 20:03

Does it need to be a dress? Why not a blouse, jacket and skirt?

Countquack · 04/03/2023 20:06

www.marksandspencer.com/collared-midi-wrap-dress/p/clp60528072?prevPage=srp#intid=plpnav_pid_pg1pip5g2r1c1

is online only but you could get a one day delivery? Looking at the reviews it seems as if lots of people are buying it for funerals. It’s a fake wrap dress, as in it doesn’t wrap. It’s obviously designed in the DVF style. The fabric is as you would except from M&S and for the price.

SoonToBeQueenCamilla · 04/03/2023 20:11

Knit dresses can climb to every lump and bump, unless they are cut really well.

Dustybarn · 04/03/2023 20:17

The first Mint Velvet dress is fab (with the pleats) and you’ll wear it for years. The others have cocktail vibes.

Pigtailsandall · 04/03/2023 20:22

@LarkRize thank you - I'm not sure I have time to hunt down sales dresses tomorrow but I'll pop into see if those are in stock in store

@CC4712 It doesn't have to be a dress, but it would mean I'd be looking for 2/3 items instead of 1. It can get pricier too.

@Countquack sadly that dress looks sold out but will pop into m&s!

Why dress? I've worn trousers to funerals.

Pigtailsandall · 04/03/2023 20:25

@astarsheis looking for trousers us even more stressful than looking for dresses! Not opposed to it but a dress feels like a quicker fix on a short timeline

I'd definitely consider cos.
Loads of smart black dresses in various fabrics - I'd get something like this and wear it with tights

Next has a few on their website so should have something in the shop. I like this one

Countquack · 04/03/2023 20:34

Sorry, I didn’t even check stock. I ordered one only a few days ago for a funeral.

OheeOheeOh · 04/03/2023 20:34

Do next click and collect, order a few, try them on in the fitting room at the store and return the ones you dont want immediately. I had a funeral last week and got a lovely lipsey dress, not too expensive too. They had quite a bit of choice online in next, have a look on their website. You usually need to order by about 11pm for it to be in store by lunch time next day.

33goingon64 · 04/03/2023 20:39

You absolutely don't need to wear black. As long as you're smart and not rainbow coloured you'll be fine in grey, navy, brown, maroon etc. I say that as someone who's had 2 immediate family member funerals recently and I wore black trousers with the same maroon and white flowery blouse for both.

This was one I ordered, it was nice on but I chose another to keep. It was v smart and modest.

Pigtailsandall · 04/03/2023 22:04

@OheeOheeOh Those delivery options might make this a practical solution, although I'm trying to not buy from Next, and would also prefer something slightly nicer-quality if I have to spend money. But the dress you bought does look like it would do the job and is nice!

@33goingon64 sorry for your losses, that's tough. I do need to wear black though, sorry. The funeral is quite formal/religious and absolutely everyone will be in black. I don't have many dark blouses or shirts anyway, so almost certainly would need to buy something anyway

Thank you all for your suggestions - I did what @catfunk suggested and just went to COS and grabbed every single black outfit, then chose something which I could wear later for work too.
