How to make a floral dress not look Twee?

I find dresses very difficult. I’ve ordered about 12 in the past couple of weeks looking for something for a 40th birthday party I’m going to. It’s at a nice country hotel type venue so I don’t want anything with too
much cleavage or short. I’m mid thirties, very tall 5ft10 and a 12/14 G cup boobs. I don’t suit long dresses or midi length or even very short dresses. Too much fabric in the bottom makes me feel massive. So having sent everything back that I ordered I’m back to an old one that I have in my wardrobe. It’s a black chiffon dress, v neck with rose details, just above the knee. The shape is perfect on me but I feel like it’s a bit twee. Is there anything I can do to make it look more up to date jewellery and shoe wise? I’ve attached one it’s similar feel to ( tighter sleeves on mine and above the kneess)

That's not twee, its bloody stunning! What are you worried about? If its general look then getting hair and nails done on the day/before may make you feel more polished?

DramaAlpaca · 01/03/2023 15:06

What a gorgeous dress. I can't be of much help with accessories, but a dress like that isn't twee at all.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/03/2023 15:08

That's not twee (where's it from?). Normally I'd say big boots but not in this case.

GoldenCagedBird · 01/03/2023 15:08

Metallic strappy sandals, or clompy chelsea boots

delicate gold jewellery

loose hair

its a lovely dress but I see what you are saying- I definitely wouldn’t have my hair up, pearls or M&S court shoes with it

RiverSkater · 01/03/2023 15:08

Dr Marten boots but agreed not twee?

Could you bravely post you in your dress ?

Eatentoomanyroses · 01/03/2023 15:17

I think mine is a bit more old fashioned as the print is more all over and I don’t think on the knee is a fashionable length these days is it? I’m choosing flattering over fashion so was just hoping to make it look more up to date . Definitely will get my hair and and makeup done that’s a good shout.

Not a fan of black for a wedding and I disagree with dainty jewellery I think it would make it look more twee if you had sweet little necklaces. If I had to wear it I would leave the neck bare and wear big dangly earrings with gems in the colour of one of the flowers on it and a bright/neon hand bang.

Who’s going to a wedding? OP says a 40th birthday party.

😂

LolaSmiles · 01/03/2023 15:41

I wouldn't overdo the accessories with a dress like that. The dress is stunning though.

Shoes aren't my thing, but I'd imagine a pair subtly metallic sandals/small heels could work.

CaptainWentworth · 01/03/2023 15:43

Kitten heels appear to be back in (have seen a few around used in online shops’ styling) - would black kitten heel sling backs work?

Rinkydinkydoodle · 01/03/2023 15:44

That’s a belter, OP. Not at all twee. Where is it from?

Eatentoomanyroses · 01/03/2023 15:49

I think the one in the pic was from oasis. Mine’s also from there but about 6 years ago.

Have you tried the one in the picture?

Agree chunky boots might help you feel more “grounded” in a dress.

RampantIvy · 01/03/2023 15:51

I don’t suit long dresses or midi length or even very short dresses.

I would have thought that at your height you would look very elegant in a midi dress.

Mrsjayy · 01/03/2023 15:52

That's definitely not twee I think its lovely I'm also funny about dresses so i get your "angst" but I don't think you need to do anything. Except wear it.

Eatentoomanyroses · 01/03/2023 15:58

@RampantIvy you would think so but it really doesn’t suit me. I’m not very confident in my tallness. I don’t like too much fabric wafting about adding to my general presence.

OP posts:
Mrsjayy · 01/03/2023 16:00

I think you should embrace your tallness and waft about in as much material as you like 😃

Eatentoomanyroses · 01/03/2023 16:05

@CaptainWentworth I was thinking the opposite. Maybe like a black velvet platform sandal? For a bit of a seventies vibe? Or am I too old?
@Mrsjayy you’re probably right. We get set in our ways with clothes I guess

It’s in the sale and it’s on the way! Thank you! I’ll be wearing it with black tights, black tassel earrings and Chie Mihara heels.

If you like this style of frock you might like the shoes, they’re not cheap but they do last, I’ve had the same black suede pair for years and years and they go with every dress I have. I am also tall and feel like a quarterback in stilettos but these are somehow okay. Think it’s cos they’re a sort of nineties shape, they’re not dainty. They’re also very not twee.

RampantIvy · 01/03/2023 16:10

One of my colleagues at work wore this dress recently. She is 6ft and the length was midi on here. She looked absolutely sensational in it. Ignore the styling in the photos - the dress doesn't have to be as revealing as that.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 01/03/2023 16:13

Not twee at all. It's the kind of dress Mrs. Danvers would have worn to Rebecca's wedding. Love it.

was this one of the twelve floral frocks you tried?
I have it and it looks very chic, far better on shapely women than on the model, and it’s got a lot of room for boobs (mine are a D and need a padded bra to fill the available space in the 14). If you’re slim round the waist the 12 would probably do it. There’s not a lot of width to it so I don’t feel like a ship in sail. You can also adjust the length of the sides and sleeves.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 01/03/2023 17:12

That's a fabulous dress OP - how about these chunky sandals to give the dress a bit if edge. Dr Martens aren't quite right for a country house...

Love the dress and the velvet platform sandals- where are they from?
