5'6" - UK size 12-14 - inspiration please!

I'm looking for some recommendations for a bit of spring / summer wardrobe shopping...

I am early 40s
5'6"
Size 12-14
Broad shouldered
Small boobs
OK (reasonably defined) waist
Bit of a tummy
Big bum
Long torso and shorter legs

I like to think im quite adventurous in terms of colours, and I'm not afraid of trying new ideas. But when push comes to shove with shopping I always revert to my defaults, which are:

  • Jeans (too skinny or too wide have the same effect of making my bum and thighs look bigger)
  • Very boring tees and vests
  • Nearly always a round neck
  • The occasional cropped trouser (I love the look, but not sure it works on my short legs)

I am really stuck in a rut! Can anyone help me out? Even if it's just posting some links of things I might not have thought of.

Budget-wise, I have some flexibility, and quality is important this time (so that I don't fall into my other trap of buying cheap, then regretting it when it all loses shape after a couple of washes). I'm happy to pay £30-50 for decent tops, and up to £100 for the right bottoms.

I work in a smart-casual office (smart jeans are fine) once a week, and the rest of the week from home. I also have a child in primary school, so am on the go / in and out the house a fair bit!

Thank you so much for any help you can give me!

Where do you usually shop?

I suggest browsing some websites for inspiration to see how things are being styled. I would start on the high end of high-street and then once you've identified the look you'd like, you can start looking out for the various components in shops of any budget.

There's a great thread running at the moment which might also provide inspiration - I'm a Stylise AMA (ask me anything) LOADS of recommendations and suggestions on there.

I like to look at sites such as Sezane, Maje, Anthropologie, ba@sh, whistles, jigsaw, Wyse London, ME+EM and I get great ideas from them.

Sometimes I see something that I go on to buy (usually track sales etc) and other times I just see combinations of things that I might not have thought of so I have that in mind when I am shopping in other shops

I'm the same size (although taller and top heavier than you).
What shops do you like? I tend to go for h&m/Zara/Mango/Monki/Weekday/Arket/cos. How do you feel about jumpsuits or dungarees? I have some plain denim and black cord Lucy & Yak dungarees and like them a lot in spring/summer with a white t-shirt and converse or sandals.
I also have a few wide leg (some cropped) jumpsuits. I tend to size up as I'm also long in the body so like the extra room. I'm not super adventurous so I tend to go for plain ones but there are so many patterned ones about too.

This spring I also fancy trying a long denim or cargo style skirt. If you have a small waist (I don't!!) I bet you'd look nice with a t-shirt tucked into a skirt.
