Many moons ago I was invited to be the plus one for the mathew Freud/Elizabeth Murdoch wedding.

Being young with options I said no! 😅

4plusthehound · 05/05/2023 02:08

Can anyone help with trousers?

I really need some but am having probelms with fit. The inside seams seem to stop near the top of my thigh (rather than the crotch).

They make my legs look short on the inside seam - it is very weird.

Does anyone else have this issue?

RhadamanthNemes · 05/05/2023 02:15

Eek, eek I have innards re Jerry. All good.

Not so much the other side.

Floisme · 05/05/2023 07:53

It probably wouldn't have been nearly as interesting years ago hound. But now he's 92 (I think?) and, although he might talk in that Vanity Fair piece about being immortal, he will know he's not and his family absolutely know. It gives it all a grim but compelling King Lear / slow motion car crash quality, at least for me, but maybe I'm weird or read too much Shakespeare when young.

Anyway these trousers, the inside seams are low but not the crotch? I can't quite visualise that - they sound very uncomfortable.

Redandblue11 · 05/05/2023 08:49

All this wedding chat makes me think what I would have worn for that wedding (Murdoch-Hall), or what I could wear if Anna and Bill got married. Surely we would receive an invitation.

hound, are you very tall? That trouser fit situation is it hapenning with a few different ones or just one specific badly made one?

botemp · 05/05/2023 09:08

"a grim but compelling King Lear / slow motion car crash"

Flo that's pretty much Succession in a nutshell, get watching already.

I'm trying to make sense of Jerry Hall's innards Confused

I'm also trying to make sense of Hound's inseam issues, it just sounds like you have a trouser crotch that isn't sitting at the actual crotch? I'm guessing it's a short/high waisted issue and I'm not sure if there's a solution beyond getting trousers altered/made.

Absolutely Lear! I think they’ve said they’re consciously referencing it?

Those Celine shorts are gorgeous … Slightly too formal for the only ‘shorts event’ I have in mind, though. I do like the Resee site, so much calmer and more organised than Vestiaire. Very tempted to get this scarf for my ancient parent’s birthday, but she despises her walking stick and would be furious.Grin

I really must bo but I think I'll have to wait now till all the brouhaha has died down and then go right back to the beginning. It does sound very Lear, just like Breaking Bad was Macbeth - can you do the wrong thing for the right reason etc.

That's a great scarf Crkd but I can understand why your mum might not think so Sad

Sorry I got so distracted by the Murdoch / Anna and Bill shenanigans that I missed the shorts. I'll go and take a look.

I will try and describe but I am not a good writter!

The inside leg seam stops at the top of my thigh. So then the zip/top part of the pants go from the top of my thigh to the waist band. Does that make any sense?

I think that before, the inside seam would go to the crotch, with the panel (that has the zip going to the waist) starting higher giving a longer look.

I know that is confusing!

I am 5ft 8 - not so tall.

It was every pair I tried on.

On loose ones it does not matter so much, in fact it works fairly well.

But in the more fitted (not tight) it looks horrible.

  • I'm guessing it's a short/high waisted issue *

Maybe.

I have gone up one size since meno - nothing horendous. My shape has changed with most of the action happening on hips and legs. They are thicker.

I may stick to skirts for the moment as I have no idea how to "dress" them now!

Trial and error I suppose.

But it could be worse.

Floisme · 05/05/2023 17:07

I went up roughly a size too but only some parts of me sized up - e.g. my shoulders remain as narrow as they ever were. It was very disconcerting! Sticking to skirts if they work better, at least in the short term while you figure it out, sounds like a decent way forward, In fact when I think about it, I spent much of my menopausal years wearing midi length tube skirts, a slouchy top and flat ankle boots!

RhadamanthNemes · 06/05/2023 18:56

I've got the 'massive shoulders' S&B posters are always trying to demise. I quite like my massive shoulders.

Anyway, I'm getting a complete monstering on another thread. May I take refuge here?

I'm bloody rubbish at consistency though.

That’s usually me! (I mean the suffering, not the doing.)

Enjoyed many of the outfits today.👑The First Minister of Scotland most outstandingly well turned out amongst the men. Pretty Yende like a godly being from a vastly superior planet. That was the whole meaning of yellow. ⭐️

Really? His kilt was too short, the jacket was the wrong shape, the sleeves were too short, the glittery lapels were awful and his wife's matching tartan goodness only knows what addition to her dress was ridiculous. David Cameron and frankly just about every man there (apart from Boris) was better turned out.

Floisme · 07/05/2023 08:19

You ok Rhadamanth?

My thoughts on yesterday:

  1. That it's time to finally put to bed the myth that men have more important things to do than get dressed up.
  1. That Camilla must love Charles very much. The look in her face when she walked into the Abbey was of abject terror.
Redandblue11 · 07/05/2023 09:00

Very accurate observations Flo.

Rhada, come along. Do you have any s&b woes? Or any other … from cooking to what papers to subscribe, I think we cover pretty much everything.

BTW - update on my subscription to an electronic paper.. don’t laugh, I got two trials at the end, one of them the telegraph… forgot completely all this coronation. I will not renew it. So far I have not seen a single article worthwhile. Still have my month free on FT, so we will see with that one.

botemp · 08/05/2023 10:58

H&M showed up in my inbox for a Mugler collaboration that's launching soon, but I don't know, it feels very dated somehow. Not in a Mugler classic is old-fashioned way <blasphemy>, the colab is very much based on the new Mugler which is more of a lycra corset insta friendly look. As much as I find the whole quiet luxury thing snoozeville, I think it's worth paying attention to as it seems to be a radicalcourse change from the elevated luxury streetwear and eye catching Insta looks that have been dominating for so long now.

Your comment on men's peacocking abilities reminds me of this painting in The Rijksmuseum by Rembrandt Flo, I took a picture as the textile treatment was a bit Issey Miyake Pleats Please-esque. Looking at it now, it probably would have made a good met gala outfit.

I didn't watch the coronation and avoided MN as everyone seems to be on crazy juice on here whenever there's a royal event on, so I assume the monstering was related to that?

I did see pictures, and agree Pretty Yende's outfit was a dream (and I'm a sucker for a virtue name although I always worry they feel forced to live up to their name, the nicest person I've ever met was named Patience and she was very patient with everyone, no matter their ass hattery). I also always enjoy seeing the non western Royals, the Bhutanese royal couple are a delight and I embarrassingly had no idea Lesotho had a Queen but she was a great sight too.

Just finished watching trasatlantic on Netflix, I think you mentioned it Bo? Thoroughly enjoyed it all, including the outfits.
did you mention another series too?
Re mugler collab, I really don’t have much to say about it other than is not at all a look I would wear or cannot even see myself with any of the individual pieces. I might be missing the point Bo, do you see some quiet luxury on it?

botemp · 08/05/2023 17:47

No, red, I guess I didn't explain it well, it's the opposite of quiet luxury and it was very much the thing/trend/whatever until everyone started jumping on quiet luxury (the colab therefore feels very out of synch with time to me). So the whole quiet luxury movement is interesting to me as it's such a departure point where previous trends seem to have built on one another. Ie. Change is on the horizon in fashionland, I'm undecided whether it's a good thing and maybe it's just a fad.

Yes, it was me who recommended Transatlantic for the decor and fashion (the story is a very Netflix modern take so if you like your history accurate it might be a hate watch). I think the other series was Succession.

Floisme · 09/05/2023 08:16

I had to rub my eyes when I looked at that Mugler collab. Is it 2010 again? I know nothing is new any more but fashion cycles seem to be getting indecently shorter.
My first thought was that it was a pendulum swing away from the 'comfy' era. Are killer heels making a comeback too? I expect so.

Redandblue11 · 09/05/2023 08:59

Oh no, you did explained well. I was feeling under the weather and not making sense. Killer heels want to come back I think, luckily at this age I don’t care about uncomfortable shoes anymore.

Floisme · 09/05/2023 09:27

I won't be wearing heels whether killer or otherwise - even M&S chunky loafers defeat me - but I never really understood the untrammelled glee when they fell out of fashion. Don't like em, don't wear them has always worked perfectly well for me. Admittedly I never worked anywhere where there was an expectation to wear them.

Floisme · 09/05/2023 09:29

Ok I should probably admit this now, there's one thing about other people wearing heels that does annoy the hell out of me and it's that clippety clop noise they make, like you're a bleeding horse. I shall be complaining about that for sure.

botemp · 09/05/2023 09:50

I think it's a case of your feet either work well with heels or don't (mine do, it's flats that cause the most grief, in turn). So I expect the glee is over the memory from those whose feet don't do well with heels and persisted anyway. I'm always happy to hear ballerinas aren't back in again as it just limits choices, although I've got enough shoes so this really shouldn't be an issue...

Not sure we'll see a huge revival of heels, they're always around, they're just not the default choice for going out and work anymore but that's very location dependent.

The current designer at Mugler debuted just before the pandemic, it very much looked like the colab, it got good reception at the time but once the pandemic started I really think it lost relevance and that's why it looks so odd now, it's like a parallel timeline where we didn't embrace sweatpants.
