That’s useful to know about Toogood (to be true!) micro and what a pity about the SN sweater changing shape. I’m going to look up Le Monde Diplomatique, it sounds good.

that is a lovely dress bo I imagine it will feel amazing if/when the temperature goes ballistic.

botemp · 24/04/2023 09:54

My Dutch newspaper always has articles (in English) from 'sister' quality papers, like Le Monde, Frankfurt Allgemeine, El Pais, NYT, etc. They're usually interesting thought pieces (especially since all these papers aren't aligned ideologically) or investigative journalism. It's always interesting what's happening elsewhere, the Anglo sphere does seem to dominate the media landscape.

In other news, for anyone with fuck you money, Kenzo Takada's Paris home is on the market. I should be spitting feathers, professionally speaking, for the complete disregard of vernacular, but I kind of love how Japanese it is. Disappointed by the kitchen though but with fuck you money that's an easy fix.

whenever I see something so beautiful and peaceful as this I imagine how grotty it would look within a few days of moving in with dog fur and random bits of newspaper flapping about. I always forget to include staff in the fantasy so I am delighted to see there is staff accommodation. Excellent daydreaming material for a Monday morning. Love the garden and especially that corridor ❤️

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 24/04/2023 10:19

I have a free morning and am currently skimming this thread which I am enjoying enormously, particularly the link to the Kenzo's house - thank you for posting that.

Stopped buying print newspapers around a decade ago, but during the pandemic I started buying the FT on Saturday - the HTSI magazine is wonderful, and I highly recommend it to those who haven't yet discovered it. There's something about a great quality newspaper (and magazine) that just can't be beat at the weekend.

As someone who prefers dresses over trousers, I have looked at Reformation a lot. I recently succumb and bought a summer dress but ended up returning because the fabric wasn't worth the money - it was a thin, almost scratchy linen which was unexpected, for almost £300, I expected better quality. (I bought a Tove dress in cotton poplin) instead. However, and as another poster commented, the dresses do make their wearer feel great I agree with this, and if the fabrics were better, and the longer dresses were without slits in the skirt, I would possibly be a convert.

Lastly, there was a mention of Dries tickets. Can I ask for what? I love him and his clothes, hence my curiosity.

So, just a few thought for now. Will return to reading the thread.

Redandblue11 · 24/04/2023 10:30

I will have a look at those papers too. So I started trying the FT digital small number of articles/week for 0.99 p/m and also hit the bullet with £49 p/year for the torygraph as DH also will get access to it.

that dress is a great shape for you Bo.

LOVE the Kenzo state in Paris. Incidentally we were thinking daydreaming with a friend we had a weekend pad in Paris serious daydreaming. And is so Japanese, my first real love, all things Japan. Reminds me so much of the ryokan with onsen baths we stayed in in Nara when I travelled Japan.
Photo 18, is that a massive comunal sofa/day bed type thing?

Redandblue11 · 24/04/2023 10:32

Crosspost with @bunnybunnybunnybunny
Waves hello and thanks for the newspaper and reformation info.
hope you stick around!

timeisnotaline · 24/04/2023 10:38

I ran not walked to look up that cheap ft limited option. Surprise!* We don’t get that option here. Such a shame.
*no actual surprise was felt.
love the dress Bo, I’d wear casually and I’m a harried mum of 3.

botemp · 24/04/2023 10:39

Welcome bunny, the Dries tickets are for his sample sale in Antwerp (May 9th-13 iirc).

Here's an additional article on the house with previous asking prices (pre renovation). At this price point houses are usually horrifically bland as they're just investment properties so it's kind of bucking the trend (thankfully) but I think it'll take the right person having to come along. It would really make a nice Ryokan in Paris but I guess the asking price would be too high for that.

Xpost with time, no cheap FT digital option here either, must be a UK thing Envy, the weekend paper subscription does work out cheaper for me, compared to buying it in shop.

OP posts:
Floisme · 24/04/2023 10:57

Hmm that house reminded me a little too much of the one in Ex Machina for comfort.

Love that dress bo. Sorry about your jumper micro, it's infuriating when you can't even trust 'quality' brands.

And hi to bunny!

Redandblue11 · 24/04/2023 11:00

Is the FT Edit
Which is 30 days free and then 0.99 per month for 6 months, then goes up to £4.99
The thing is not access to all the digital edition, only to a selection of handpicked stories. In 6 months should give me enough idea if I want to carry on or not.
Can you not see FT Edit if you search apps to purchase?

botemp · 24/04/2023 11:01

The house in Ex Machina house is actually a hotel (not as creepy in RL, and the lower house was a studio build, I think). Not really a spoiler, the latest Succession episode was filmed there too.

OP posts:
timeisnotaline · 24/04/2023 11:33

Hmm so we do have ft edit. I have just installed it and read an article without subscribing at all. I might see how far that takes me! I don’t mind being able to read a limited number of articles but I do mind being able to read articles from a limited subset, as that’s far less likely to have the detailed finance/private equity pieces that are what I really want. Do you know which option the edit provides?

Redandblue11 · 24/04/2023 11:58

Yes @timeisnotaline , I am reading for free at the moment so I am assuming in a month they will ask me for money 💰, not sure yet what articles is for as is the first day. So we are on the same boat!

mm47 · 24/04/2023 13:43

I think you can read articles in the FT section called HTSI (used to be called How To Spend It until they decided not quite what they want to put across) online for free?

EffortlessDesmond · 24/04/2023 13:47

Hi Bunny...

Good dress bo and thanks for the links to the Kenzo house: if I won Euromillions... maybe I should check the ticket! Very sad about the SN jumper micro; it's so irritating when the quality is not as it should be.

Today's FT's edit has an article about building wardrobes you don't have to think about, which I have forwarded to myself thinking that I could paste it here, only to find that you are all trialling it! https://ftedit.onelink.me/Ju3k/aijvytl5 I don't know if it will let you through the paywall. And really, given that we all seem to think a lot about clothes, I feel it's probably not written with us in mind.

That article has some interesting bits including a reference to some good alterations tailors in Soho. But how can that woman wear the same uniform of white jeans, navy jacket and suède loafers every day? She looks good, but... I love wearing a variety of clothes and looks.

Floisme · 24/04/2023 16:39

Thanks for the link. I can only read the first few paragraphs but no worries, I can't see any appeal in a wardrobe I never have to think about. It reminds me of the time a colour consultant tried to persuade me to sign up for a workshop by telling me it would take all the thinking out of getting dressed.

Redandblue11 · 24/04/2023 16:48

Not for me either. I take pleasure not only in getting dressed but also thinking about it. I agree that sometimes I wish I didn’t have to think too much, due to the particular circumstances, but for that one surely goes to the old trusted friends in the wadrobe?

I missed your post micro, very disappointing. I never owned or looked at SN too closely to be honest.

botemp · 24/04/2023 16:50

Paywall bypass for Flo, don't click the cookies thing. Hmm, interesting, on the demographic thread I was going on about focusing on silhouette in this context and suddenly I see it in print 🧐 I do feel it stands in a bit for flattering here though and the can wear anything without thinking thing feels like a rebranding of the capsule wardrobe (which definitely feels like it's on the outs).

There was an interesting video I watched the other day, more to do with pattern design but it was about the process of figuring out how to use these proportion rules to work for your body. It was very interesting, even if you don't see. The last 10 minutes are just about her chickens, ignore that.

OP posts:
botemp · 24/04/2023 16:51

*sew, it wouldn't be very interesting if you don't see 🙈

OP posts:
Floisme · 25/04/2023 08:24

Thanks bo, I actually found that more interesting than I'd expected. Think more about clothes before you buy them then you won't have to think quite so much about getting dressed - that was my take on it. Either way that's still a lot of thinking.

Speaking of thinking, I thought of you this weekend Desmond cos I picked up a Joyce Riding linen jacket / top thingy. It's part waterfall jacket which I was never keen on but it also has these wrap ties and, because the linen is soft but also beautifully heavy, it lends itself to origami-ish draping and folding, although whether or not they will hold I don't know yet. And it's a sludgy green that bani will love if she's reading Wink Anyway only £6 so worth a pop even if it does end up on the re-donation pile.

And then I found a Jean Mui trouser suit, I'm guessing 1980s, in a very drapey navy blue (of course, did she ever wear anything else?). It looks very dated and it's also too big, so it may turn out to be a label victim buy, but so iconic I couldn't resist. I've also just read that she was 66 - my age - when she died. Lovely.

EffortlessDesmond · 25/04/2023 08:46

Well spotted Flo! Joyce Ridings was brilliant in its day, and the fabrics were always gorgeous, especially the linen. I would probably have bought the Jean Muir suit for sentimental reasons too. It's sobering to think she died at our age; I no longer claim to be the spring chicken, but dodging the old biddy is still an objective.

botemp · 25/04/2023 10:50

Interesting Flo, my takeaway from the article was, in your thirties stop making clothes about what you think you should/want to be and rather brace who you are. But I already do the whole think too much before buying so I guess that's why that didn't feel like much of a revelation. And tbh if you're not an overly analytical sort I'm not sure if it wouldn't all start feeling like a chore.

I agree with Poppy that getting to into what works best for you can be a bit monotonous and I enjoy the versatility of clothes but accept to others it's just like shovelling in any food as fuel and there's an imbalance in that it's another thing women need to appear to effortlessly know.

At the moment I'm playing around with a dropped waist again, this time on wide leg trousers, didn't think it would work but it does somehow and I like the silhouette it creates. Maybe that's down to the individual pieces working for me or maybe I'm just over optimistic about the results, too much thinking for me to consider it more than that 🤔

Hmm the video from my previous post posted fine yesterday but now looks like a crash image Confused is it visible to others?

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 25/04/2023 13:16

It sounds like you have great finds there Flo! I am now googling Joyce ridings…

I can see the video Bo, but not had a look at it yet, need to catch up when I get the chance .

speaking of victim label, years and years ago I grabbed a second hand YSL linen coat. I try it every so often but never really made the jump to actually wear it . I will see if I can take a couple of photos and show you.
