I need to check Succession.
And transatlantic.

This is what I wore for work the other day, my MH trousers with a max mara jacket (eBay) , the trousers are quite slouchy at the legs so white leather trainers seemed appropriate. So I personally like to wear different clothes to what I would wear at home or to go out but I try to not do a full formal suit.

I must admit smart, sober but unobtrusive is my dress code for most funerals, unless I either knew the person very well, or there are other instructions. I normally think that, if anyone notices or remembers what I was wearing, I've done it wrong. I don't wear black though but that's because I hardly own anything that colour

Floisme · 19/04/2023 19:29

I love your whole outfit in that pic Red. I think I've got some MH trousers like that, or very similar!

EffortlessDesmond · 19/04/2023 21:39

That's a very lovely colour combination, red. And nice waist definition; great look.

Redandblue11 · 20/04/2023 14:44

Thank you both.
I did a big wash of my woollens and cashmere jumpers so now I just need to bag them up. I also use those bags that you suck air with the hoover.
I have started a tidy up of my clothes, normally do it twice a year, I find that quite therapeutic in a way, but takes me a good week to finish it properly as I do it in chunks when I get the chance.

desmond / any others do you have a The Times subscription? Or any other paper?
I am tempted to get a paper electronic subscription, but not sure which one… sometimes I get tempted to read some of the telegraph articles but I don’t really want to pay to them, feels like supporting that side of politics but some of the articles I would be quite happy to read …
I feel at the moment that with the BBC and The guardian is not quite enough.

EffortlessDesmond · 20/04/2023 16:08

Red, I have electronic subs for both newspapers, plus the weekend paper for The Times. Torygraph is actually a good newspaper, provided you take its obvious political leanings into consideration. IMO it's currently better reading than the Times, which has a new editor (from the Sun). Both are centre-right but the Torygraph costs £49 per year, and the Times is £35 per month. I prefer the Times on my phone, and the Torygraph on a bigger screen. There's always an e-offer on The Times, usually at about £3 per month for three months, which is long enough to decide whether you want to stick with it.

I often buy the Weekend FT, because it's such a good read. There's also an FT Edit, which is eight articles each day, on offer at 99p per month. Being a complete media junkie, I also have an e-sub to the NY Times, which was very cheap, but which I don't pore over daily. However, their consumer products guide (Wirecutter) is really useful: DS needed some noise-cancelling ear buds (he's bought and returned any number of pairs) and their recommendation was inexpensive and performs so well we bought a second set for DH to use when he was in hospital for a few days with some very noisy patients.

I also dob £2 a month to the Grauniad so I can read an alternative opinion in good conscience. Hope this has helped you make up your mind.

microbius · 20/04/2023 19:52

Desmond, could you share the tip for the noise-cancelling earbuds? thanks

microbius · 20/04/2023 19:56

In terms of funerals, I can only add that I once was at a humanist funeral (I think) and it as the best funeral ever. Was really about celebrating a person's life and everybody dressed like for a party. There was a lot of smiling and crying too, the person was pretty young as well, but the tragedy of it was well framed to celebrate what we had

EffortlessDesmond · 20/04/2023 20:51

The noise cancelling earbuds are Anker Soundcore, at about £65 on Amazon. There's an updated version, I think, but the cheapies work really well and are very straightforward to link to devices. They also give you transparent sound, so you're aware of what's happening if you are running, or opaquing. It's not a complete noise blank, but for £65 it's a good value option.

I can't remember where I read it but I recall seeing that full on black was disrespectful unless you were a close family mourner. I suppose it's because it can be very eye catching.

I do that twice a year too @Redandblue11 . it is great, partly because I feel like I am treating my clothes as well as they have treated me. 😂But also, when I pull out the SS box or A/W I feel like it is a new wardrobe again because I leterally have not seen them for months!

red love that outfit on you, those colours look amazing together and really suit you! I have a subscription for the Telegraph which is an absolute rag and I should stop it and we have a subscription to the FT. We also buy a hard copy of the FT at the weekends and that is our only weekend newspaper. Cannot recommend it enough.

NatashaDancing · 21/04/2023 08:34

I have a Times and a Scotsman subscription. I would recommend The Times. There's nothing wrong with The Scotsman but it's obviously focused on Scotland.

I've given up on The Guardian.

missmoon · 21/04/2023 08:34

@Redandblue11 delurking to say that both the FT and the Times are worth subscribing to. I left Twitter a while ago and decided to pay for a few subscriptions to keep up with the news. With the Times, I have the iPhone app, with a subscription through the app store which is around £25 a month, but is for the phone only. You can also get the online subscription package from the Times directly, which covers both app and website, for the same price plus a discounted rate for the first three months, but they also collect all of your data (while they get nothing with the app). The articles are mostly quite balanced as is the comments section (which is a lot of fun). There are some great fashion and style articles too.

I also get the FT on my phone app, although that one is free through work, and donate £5 to the Guardian. The FT has a great “ask a stylist” section which is fun, as well as some articles on the fashion industry which are also interesting. The final one I read is the Washington Post for £5 a month.

I couldn’t do the Telegraph, I read it occasionally at my parents in law’s but I just can’t take the misleading news stories and constant focus on “woke”.

Voltefarce · 21/04/2023 08:40

I have subscriptions to the Times (mainly because I keep forgetting to cancel), Telegraph and FT. I could do without the Times.

botemp · 21/04/2023 08:41

I have the FT weekend print subscription and enjoy it. I'm not sure digital newspaper subscriptions are worth it (unless you just want to support them financially or have a lot of leisure time) as they vary between very compact and not particularly informative pieces beyond breaking news (which you get everywhere) and very long in depth ones, which I usually don't have the time for during the week and have already forgotten about by the weekend.

I do like Tortoise Media which is more audio based and investigative reporting but they also have a daily newsletter with a round up of important news stories. I've considered subscribing to them but the perks don't make that much sense outside of the UK but I might just do to support them. Not sure where they sit politically somewhere between New Labour and Cameron's Conservatives, I think.

I have a Dutch subscription too, but that's probably useless to you 😂

Fwiw, noise cancelling headphones give me vertigo, I don't like them at all.

We have a subscription to the Times, both online (for my commute) and in paper, for my husband, but I am getting a mite fed up of its new fluffiness and gossip. There are still some good and some excellent bits though so I will continue taking it.

My county library offers online access to Press Reader, which enables me to read (slightly clunky) versions of many magazines and papers including the Telegraph so I read it on that at the weekend. I've also learned that if you open a link to a Telegraph article and immediately switch to airplane mode, the Telegraph firewall no longer applies. Separately, the library gives access to Libby, which enables me to read UK Vogue for free, as well as other magazines on top of what's in Press Reader.

My husband is about to cancel his Guardian subscription after reading it all his life - its self-satisfaction and anti-Starmer stance has got to him enough at last.

Floisme · 21/04/2023 08:46

I've never seen that suggested about black at funerals NatashaDancing but it can certainly be a very dramatic colour - A Mrs Danvers dress at a funeral for example would catch the eye. In fact I think I might insist on them at my funeral, or better still, all deathbed visits as that way I'll get to enjoy them too.

Red I share your dilemma and don't have any subscriptions. I used to be a loyal Guardian reader and still skim the headlines most days but won't support them any further until they remember that activism isn't journalism. Even Marina Hyde is beginning to irritate me. I do think more highly of The Observer (same owners and website but different editors and writers) so I'll buy that and / or sometimes the weekend Financial Times as I still like real newspapers on a Sunday. And I have free logins to The Times and The Telegraph which let you read a few articles a month (although the Times one seems to have stopped working).

botemp · 21/04/2023 09:00

That is my main pet peeve about UK newspapers, they're unapologetically politically aligned and often just seem like an extension of a political party, and often, just certain factions of it. Obviously this happens everywhere but the UK papers seem to be some of the worst examples IME. I agree the Observer is a good outlier, along with FT they seem more old school journalist minded.

Black has always been the norm for everyone at funerals here because that's the colour you wear to church on Sunday too, I think it's a Calvinist thing.

Redandblue11 · 21/04/2023 11:49

Thank you everyone for all your insights on newspapers.
I will probably end up trying the digital FT edition even if I do not like the sound of them choosing my articles just to try it out and probably will try 1 more digital, might toss a coin to decide 😉
I mainly read stuff digitally to be honest, and since I spend so much time searching for information and reading it I think it is only fair I pay for some of it.
Also looking at tortoise news might , thanks for that too!
Argentinean papers remind me if the ones here too, extremely polarised and just extensions of the main political party or of the opposition.

Back to fashion, I am intrigued … I have sold well a handful of stuff on Vinted , then I decided to pay and promote one item that had been sitting there and sold quickly… since then the views and people putting as favourite the rest of my items seem to have lower considerably… I am thinking an algorithm is doing this to temp me to pay for promoting my wadrobe… has anyone else experienced this? I cannot believe is coincidence.

botemp · 21/04/2023 16:24

@Redandblue11 the Dries van Noten tickets are available from now.

I don't know about Vinted algorithms, I've never sold anything on there. Did just pick up a Jil Sander dress, it's more fitted than billowy as I imagined, it still looks very nice but it's more work than casual but that's probably okay as I always scramble for workwear when it's suddenly very warm.

In terms of newspapers, we subscribe to Le Monde Diplomatique (English edition); it comes bi weekly or even monthly (I think?) and contains some good political analysis unlike most other newspaper and what became of them.

I went to the Toogood sample sale. I mentioned them on another thread and despite misgivings (I really quite dislike the furniture and art of the designer) I was quite interested to see what their trousers are like. They have a collection of trousers all named by a trade; ironmonger, driver, painter, writer, tinker, baker, landscaper, harvester and whatnot. A little silly but I am interested in workwear cuts. I have to say bo was completely right on that thread. They are way too whimsical and the cut is not sharp enough. Somehow they don't travel across a wide range of bodies, not a single piece fit me in any nice way. It made me think of the art of tailoring that Margaret Howell has, where her items can be short on me, but there is a way in which a lot of her things can fit a variety of bodies. I am not even sure what this is, some kind of precision that ends up being more open. Toogood looks as if a child played with tailoring; at price points that at the moment are approaching Margaret Howell, and this is just ridiculous.

Another disappointment is that Studio Nicholson's handwashed and dried flat jumper changed shape. I have to say, I am very disappointed. It seems that the new brands really struggle to retain quality production, even when they charge quite a lot. End of my Sunday depressing contribution :)
