In terms of newspapers, we subscribe to Le Monde Diplomatique (English edition); it comes bi weekly or even monthly (I think?) and contains some good political analysis unlike most other newspaper and what became of them.
I went to the Toogood sample sale. I mentioned them on another thread and despite misgivings (I really quite dislike the furniture and art of the designer) I was quite interested to see what their trousers are like. They have a collection of trousers all named by a trade; ironmonger, driver, painter, writer, tinker, baker, landscaper, harvester and whatnot. A little silly but I am interested in workwear cuts. I have to say bo was completely right on that thread. They are way too whimsical and the cut is not sharp enough. Somehow they don't travel across a wide range of bodies, not a single piece fit me in any nice way. It made me think of the art of tailoring that Margaret Howell has, where her items can be short on me, but there is a way in which a lot of her things can fit a variety of bodies. I am not even sure what this is, some kind of precision that ends up being more open. Toogood looks as if a child played with tailoring; at price points that at the moment are approaching Margaret Howell, and this is just ridiculous.
Another disappointment is that Studio Nicholson's handwashed and dried flat jumper changed shape. I have to say, I am very disappointed. It seems that the new brands really struggle to retain quality production, even when they charge quite a lot. End of my Sunday depressing contribution :)
