Straight leg jeans - raw hem - insane fit requirements!

Well here's a challenge Grin

I am craving a pair of jeans, slim/straight cut but not wide, cropped, ideally with a raw edge. To wear with a blazer and loafers, you know the look.

In a size that doesn't exist on this mortal plane.

Thanks to a delicious combination of injury and peri, my body finds itself sporting size 10/12 legs alongside a size 16/18 stomach.

Jeans that fit my stomach make my legs look like they are in a clown car.

Help me please! I know the perfect item won't exist, but how close can we get...?

Maternity ones? They're designed for larger tummies.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 21/02/2023 07:22

Or with a very low waist so they sit below your stomach.

Catspyjamas17 · 21/02/2023 07:26

Something with stretch in the middle. Have you tried say size 16/18 jeggings or stretch skinny jeans? They will probably sit more like straight cut jeans on your slim legs but sit on the middle comfortably.

77toozy · 21/02/2023 07:36

Omg OP, are you me? I have exactly the same issue! I have nothing really helpful to add as I haven't worked it out myself yet. But I came on to suggest buying jeans & cutting the leg off to get the raw edge you want.

Luckingfovely · 21/02/2023 07:41

@OrderOfTheKookaburra those are both options I hadn't considered so I think you for those!

In the interests of keeping the Earth on its normal axis, I don't think I should walk around stomach-out, as it were. Dire things may occur.

Maternity jeans would probably be a good call for wise but I don't think I can quite let go to that state yet. I know I look pregnant from certain angles, but don't want to encourage that behaviour.

Hhm, stretch skinny jeans in a larger size... with the hems cut off... might provide a solution!

So - where does one find these jeans that have really good stretch around the middle but might also be thick material enough to hold a proper jean shape? I do want to avoid looking like I'm wearing leggings (while feeling like I am, obviously).

Oh and if they also have corset-like properties to squash the billowing stomach that would also be a boon.

Buy a pair that fit your tummy then send to a seamstress to adjust the legs?

Niftythrifter · 21/02/2023 09:24

Primark have some straight leg jeans in at the moment with raw hems. The dark wash is £16 but I picked up the light wash for £4 so if you are going down the seamstress route it might be worth going to Primark and then it’s not going to cost you £££ including alterations.

Niftythrifter · 21/02/2023 09:27

These are them www.primark.com/en-gb/p/vintage-slim-straight-jeans-mid-blue-991038913510 It doesn’t say vintage on the tag just in case you look for them, it just says slim straight.

Luckingfovely · 21/02/2023 09:55

Oh @Niftythrifter in the Indigo colourway they are close to what I was picturing, thank you.

I will go and try on...

Niftythrifter · 22/02/2023 09:19

Just realised that rather than be light wash the jeans I bought from Primark for £4 are stone wash!

Sotired22 · 22/02/2023 09:23

I would definitely look at maternity jeans. Don’t feel weird about it, it really doesn’t matter. It’s just jeans with a stretchy waist that’s all. I suffer from bad bloating and sometimes wear them even though I’m not pregnant. It’s fine!

EyesOnThePies · 22/02/2023 09:28

The M&S Harper Cigarette are very stretchy, (or at least one type are, I think they also do more expensive non-stretchy ones).

Go into a big M&S and have a try on if a few sizes?

boboshmobo · 22/02/2023 09:50

The hem doesn't matter as you can just cut that . I'd go with getting the altered around your legs .

blobby10 · 22/02/2023 09:59

@Luckingfovely have you tried Lands End jeans? I'm similar in having a bigger peri midriff compared to my slim legs and love their mid rise straight fit jeans. I think you can get them unhemmed too!

Luckingfovely · 22/02/2023 10:20

@EyesOnThePies those Harper jeans look like the Holy Grail in terms of leg shape! Now I know I want Cigarette Jeans, thank you so much!

And @blobby10 I'd never have thought of looking at Lands End, but some of their jeans do look really nice, thank you.

Thank you for posting this OP, I have the same problem. My legs/hips are in no way proportionate to the size of my stomach. So either I get them to fit my stomach but are ridiculously baggy on my thighs and hips or I get them to fit there and my stomach bulges uncomfortably and hideously over the top. I'm going to start looking at maternity options now though!!

EyesOnThePies · 22/02/2023 11:29

Honestly the M&S Harper Cigarette jeans are SO stretchy at the top, even the waist band stretches. But do hold your bulges just enough!

Go and try them on and see how you get on with them.

M&S have great ranges of jeans atm. I have the corduroy Siennas, boyfriend jeans (which are thicker proper weight denim) as well as Harper Cigarette.

FinallyHere · 22/02/2023 12:10

Following on from the M&S suggestion upthread, it's so disappointing if you want to try something on to find it's not in stock.

I'd encourage everyone to use the click and collect service to order the range of sizes, styles and colours you want to try on, for delivery to a M&S store.

You then have a few days to visit the store, try everything on and return anything you don't want on the spot. If you pay by credit card, take the card with you to make sure the credit arrives in plenty of time.
