Why is it so hard to find a pair of jeans?

Have had a fruitless search round the shops today.

My current jeans are on their last legs, with holes that can’t be mended.

All I am looking for is a low-mid rise waist, and proper, sturdy denim without elastane.
I don’t want skinny, but aside from that I am fairly ambivalent about leg style - I prefer straight, but it’s not a complete dealbreaker.

I tried on loads of styles - straight, boyfriend, girlfriend, mom, flared…Everything is thin flimsy fabric with loads of elastane. Or else a massively high waist with loads of baggy fabric bulging out around the hips. Or both.

Does what I am looking for actually exist? And if so, where?

Huit denim.

Have one pair nearly ten years old and one new. If they suit you you won't regret it.

Jeans truly have been sent to test us.

I like a straight leg from & Other Stories. Have you tried them?

SorrelForbes · 18/02/2023 16:32

Levi's 501s cropped or ribcage. 100% cotton no stretch.

crispinglovershighkick · 18/02/2023 17:25

eBay or kilo sale? You can refine your search with measurements or size and you can often get a good idea of shape from photos. Or search for the same style and brand you've been wearing.

crispinglovershighkick · 18/02/2023 17:27

Sorry, I meant you can refine your eBay search. At a kilo sale there's just a lot of trying on Smile

I get all of my jeans from M&S. Find them a really good quality and fit.
If you don't mind spending more I've got jeans that I've had for years that I love. Tommy hillfigure and Spanx. The Spanx jeans are normally around £150 but I found mine in Tkmaxx for £15!

QueenRefusenik · 18/02/2023 17:46

Big fan of esprit jeans here, and also lots of options with organic/sustainable cotton for not stupid prices

Florenceandthevaccine · 18/02/2023 17:52

I buy men's jeans, the rise is better, no elastin, they sit better on the hips and they are straight in the leg which is the way the trends are going. Lee and Levi's are good and I generally get them on eBay hardly worn.

Rollinghill · 18/02/2023 17:54

Vinted. That's where I finally found my newest pair of jeans!

Mueslikid · 18/02/2023 18:13

Hmm, maybe second hand is the way to go. I prefer to try them on though. I love buying shirts and knitwear second hand but for some reason I find trouser fit really hard to judge by sight.

Interesting idea to try men’s. Not sure that would work with my figure, but maybe. I used to like men’s t shirts when I was younger, now they get wedged on my hips.

I think I have seen an & other stories shop in town, so will give that a try too, thanks for all the ideas.

I had some great pairs of jeans from Liverpool Los Angeles. They fit well and are good quality. My trouble is I wear them to death and wear them out!

AdventFridgeOfShame · 18/02/2023 20:28

The state of women's jeans is dire. Flimsy fabric, bad cut, total reliance on lycra.

Another one here who got peeved and bought men's jeans. Yes, they could do with a belt as they have a couple of inches spare on the waist, but so do lots of women's ones.

Hit TKMaxx and try some on. If in doubt go up a size.

boboshmobo · 18/02/2023 20:59

Levi's 501 have no stretch , I have both crop and skinny and I can confirm they do not stretch and they have classic straight ones now too.

Next mom jeans so not have any stretch either . ( the non stretch ones ) .
What body shape are you?

Mueslikid · 18/02/2023 22:19

Body shape wise sort of upside down pear shape if anything, usually wear a size bigger in tops than trousers.
But still have hips, and not as slim or taut as I once was, waist a bit thicker now.

I used to like hipster wide leg and flared jeans back in the day, felt they balanced my figure well, straight I now think are more classic though. High waist is a big no.

I like the marks lily slim; I find all their jeans super high waisted and uncomfortable except for these (I think I must have a short body)
they are the only m&s jeans I like. def worth a try!

NosieRosie · 18/02/2023 22:58

My absolute favourite jeans with no stretch used to be gap. Sadly gap don’t do them anymore. Following….

Christabel23 · 18/02/2023 23:06

Fatface Chesham girlfriend - proper denim, midrise and not too skinny or baggy?

DinosaurOfFire · 19/02/2023 01:09

Urban Outfitters low rise flares are the best jeans I've found in years! The only other jeans I had that I liked this much were topshop jeans between 2000-2010 ish. They are fairly straight-up-and down, low enough that they don't dig in on my hips and high enough that they don't show my underwear. They probably would have classed as low to midrise in the early 2000s when everything was super low rise.

Another vote for m & s! Great lengths available too esp if you are short like me. The magic jeans really are magic, I love my black high waist skinny flares, super flattering on. Can I ask why you don’t like high waist jeans? I think they give really great support if like me you less six pack than you used to be!
