Stressing about what to wear for working team day

9thFloorNightmare · 16/02/2023 16:53

Since covid, I’m not going out much and overthinking when I need to be social

Team day - the venue is a mini golf place in Central London and the thing is in the afternoon on a weekday

I planned to go very casual but now that I saw the venue youtube video, all the people in the video, they are wearing clothes that are smarter than what I chose, especially shoes - they are basically wearing work shoes, but I wanted to wear (good and new) trainers

I know the people in the video are models/actors and the venue wants everything to look great, but now I’m stressing

My workplace is actually very relaxed about dress code

What would you wear?

I'd wear something that I felt not too overdressed in. Maybe trainers, jeans and a jumper with a tshirt underneath so that I can remove a layer if needed or a tshirt and blazer style jacket so its casual smart. Recently had a team day and a few people who had added a dressy scarf to look smart had removed them quite early on as I think they felt dressed up.

I wouldn't go by the video as they're probably aimed at corperate. Maybe ask what others are wearing?

MarshaMelrose · 16/02/2023 16:59

Is it just talks all day? I'd wear black trousers, black ankle boots with a 1½ - 2 inch heel. And a respectable top. It's my go to work outfit and seems to fit all occasions. I also feel it's both informal but smart and I feel comfortable in it. I wear it off my work premises to other offices as well.

I'm sure whatever you wear, you won't look out of place so wear what is normal in your company.

Dogsarebetterthanhumans · 16/02/2023 16:59

Whatever you feel comfortable in. If you’re uncomfortable it will show and you will feel it all day. If you’re comfortable, you can relax and let yourself be yourself. Have fun! Xx

DungareeDana · 16/02/2023 17:02

I'd wear jeans and a non-sweatshirt jumper. And trainers that were relatively unbattered.

MushMonster · 16/02/2023 17:04

What about slim fit trousers with a plain shirt/top/ turtle neck, a casual blazer and some comfy shoes?
You can even wear jeans, especially dark ones and still look more smart than casual.

DelphiniumBlue · 16/02/2023 17:06

I'd wear trainers and maybe wide leg trousers for a relaxed yet smartish vibe.

is mini golf - that is why I chose trainers but women in the video were wearing heels!

I was wanted to wear t-shirt and blazer but can’t pull it off:(
It doesn’t look right on me

I bought new trainers just for this! actually wanted to buy in a very long time so used the excuse

Can you please show me what you mean by non sweatshirt jumper?

RTHJ14 · 16/02/2023 17:12

I went to corporate mini golf session in a midi dress and trainers recently… I think those videos are to attract the corporate business!

Divebar2021 · 16/02/2023 17:13

Do you normally wear heels because I work in central London and haven’t worn heels in my office for 4 years ( probably ). I’d either wear wide leg trousers and trainers or some straight legged jeans and ankle boots.

HazelnutAfterDark · 16/02/2023 17:18

I love these occasions so I can buy more clothes, I hardly have anything

My only pair of skinny jeans is falling a part and is light blue. I have a dark one but it is loose boyfriend style - I think - it doesn’t feel smart at all

Links and photos of looks appreciated, please help! I am clueless:(

  • skinny dark jeans
  • loose black trousers
  • tops

I have my new trainers and other good shoes I can wear

I wear heeled ankle boots with trousers because it makes my legs look longer and the trousers fall better. (And also because most trousers I buy are a couple of inches too long and the boots mean I don't have to shorten them! I'm a lazy arse! But, in all honesty, I do think a heel looks nice.)

But my dressing attitude now is this. If I look in the mirror, do I think I look respectful and respectable? Then, even if everyone else is scruffier than me, I don't care because I know I look good. And if everyone shows up in suits and dresses and looks dressier than me, I don't care because I know I look good.

Wear what you feel confident and comfortable in.

HazelnutAfterDark · 16/02/2023 17:19

ooops not skinny trousers - slim fit!

I’m not big fan of skinny

redspottedmug · 16/02/2023 17:20

Heels? Nobody wears heels. Especially not for mini golf.

Indigo jeans, cashmere jumper, fresh-ish trainers.

HazelnutAfterDark · 16/02/2023 17:23

My workplace is corporate but relaxed in general on regular working days and many working from home the majority of the time. On office days with large group meetings face to face we make an effort. But this is out of the office so I’m lost

And also I’m single and other companies might be there, so I must look good iykwim? 🥹

Are they playing mini golf? I thought they were just using the venue facilities. If they're just playing mini golf, I'd be in trainers and not my heeled boots.

Are you actually playing mini golf or are you just using their conference rooms?

SaltyGod · 16/02/2023 17:27

Could you ask a colleague what they're wearing?

Personally I'd wear flats, but I also know that I don't feel quite my best when out in flats. But this, to me, is a flats occasion.

As a compromise I could do a low healed boot.

HazelnutAfterDark · 16/02/2023 18:12

We are playing mini golf - it is team building day supposed to be fun and work networking

MarshaMelrose · 16/02/2023 18:19

Oh well, if you're actually playing golf, trainers. You need to be comfortable. I, personally, still wouldn't wear jeans - I'd wear straight legged but comfortable trousers. But I don't think it matters really.

Christmascracker0 · 16/02/2023 18:22

I’d definitely wear some nice clean trainers.

Jeans would be acceptable I think, or a slim fit cropped trouser or a wide leg trouser to be a bit smarter?

What are your options for on top?

9thFloorNightmare · 16/02/2023 18:38

I remembered that I have this uniqlo jumpsuit, is very comfortable, has pockets and makes me feel great

I can wear it down with my new NewB black and grey and maybe have a red slim cashmere cardigan? What do you think?

I’ve done a lot of these events - I usually wear skinny jeans, T-shirt, hoodie and trainers. Most of my colleagues wear similar.

Feeling great is the key. That sounds perfect, like you've put effort into it and are appropriate whilst also being comfortable.
Have a great day.
