What colour should I dye this slip dress? (Pic attached)

Got a gorgeous satin slip dress for a fiver!

however, it’s a nude/champagne colour and it’s just drains me and my pale Scottish skin ( I’m one of those so pale they look blue people).

What colour would you dye this dress?

I want to dye it something that’s this season ( purple/ turquoise/ green/ cobalt blue??) but not sure what’s the best colour is to cover the champagne colour?

thinking will need to go for something darker to cover original colour, but also to help make me look less drained!!

What colour hair do you have?

I'm leaning towards navy blue.

febbabies2023 · 11/02/2023 14:54

Ooh a lovely emerald green would look stunning!

RainbowZebraWarrior · 11/02/2023 14:55

Jade or emerald green.

I love turquoise, but it may come out a little muddy with the initial ivory colour.

Thisseasonscolour · 11/02/2023 14:56

I’m light blonde, and usually wear navy all the time, so maybe that would work!

also quite fancy emerald…

Exactly my thoughts! Turquoise is my go to colour, but have never dyed anything before and worry about that

What is the material made of? If its polyester it won't take dye very well and you are unlikely to get a vibrant colour

WashAsDelicates · 11/02/2023 15:03

Even if it is silk, the thread is like to be synthetic and not take the dye. So choose a colour which will work well with cream stitching.

This is very good advice

harrysbeard · 11/02/2023 15:11

I agree I don't think the stitching will dye

WeCome1 · 11/02/2023 15:12

Maybe coral? With the cream stitching.

Thanks for this! The whole dress is 100% polyester so will choose accordingly

coral is a good shout

I don't think it will take tbh

WeCome1 · 11/02/2023 15:27

Ah, no, sorry. It’s only natural fabrics that take dye, generally.

WeAreTheHeroes · 11/02/2023 15:28

You need specialist dye for polyester. Dylon won't work.

Thisseasonscolour · 11/02/2023 15:31

next question - anyone got anyone recommendations for good dye for synthetic fabrics ? 😱

YOu can dye polyester but you need to do it in a large saucepan on the hob as the water needs to be boiling hot. Best to keep an eye out in the local charity shops for a huge saucepan - not a job for your finest Le Creuset....

This blog is pretty good on how to do it.

However, if it is just that the colour is draining your face you could consider reworking the dress to add a wide band or ruffle of eg a teal colour around the top so that a colour that suits you is close to your skin. Perhaps bind the hem with the same colour and change the straps to tie in?

Mybumlooksbig · 11/02/2023 15:35

A lovely jewel colour

tallwivglasses · 11/02/2023 15:38

rit-dye.co.uk looks good for synthetic fabrics but I haven't tried it out yet.
Model it here when you've done it! (another vote for emerald green)

Thisseasonscolour · 11/02/2023 15:46

@londonmummy1966 thanks for that link…will see how it goes.

@tallwivglasses I will…watch this space! ( running out to find old saucepan now 🏃‍♀️

I agree with PPs re stitching. I once dyed a top to try to hide a stain but the stitching didn't dye and it looked ridiculous.

How about trying a statement necklace in a colour you know suits you to separate the dress from your face IYSWIM and see if that helps?

Thisseasonscolour · 11/02/2023 17:08

@Christmascracker0 i was just about to settle on either violet or Teal! Now you’ve got me me thinking…pink might work better with nude starting shade…I’ll have a 👀

ive attached some colours I can achieve using synthetic dye …
