Salt and Pepper hair..considering colouring it.. advice please (photo)

I've been 'going grey' deliberately for about 6 years now (previously coloured) I'm 55.
But.. I have white where the front parts, scattered grey throughout and the back is still mid/dark brown. I was hoping for glorious silver hair but looking at my Mum, who is 76 and not much greyer than me, I don't think it's going to happen any time soon.

I like the lack of expense having natural hair but I feel and look washed out. But I don't want blocky brown hair any more, and the one time I went blonde I looked truly dreadful..I have sallow skin and looked like a corpse (my hair isn't as yellow as the pic looks though!)

Can any one suggest anything?

The colour looks lovely to me.
I’m late 30’s and dye my (fully grey) hair and would like the salt and pepper look.
How about a toner to brighten it up?

amidsummernightsdream · 07/02/2023 21:34

These come in different tones

I love the colour. I like how you have a streak down the front (left in the picture). I’d just get a good conditioning treatment and nice makeup. Choose clothes colours that compliment you. But your hair is lovely!

WhereIsMyGlasses · 07/02/2023 21:36

I like your colour, and can totally understand the upkeep issue.

On another note, your cat is fabulous!

SunshineAndFizz · 07/02/2023 21:38

Look at the way your cat is looking at you. Adorable.

Your fair looks lovely.

Starrt · 07/02/2023 21:39

I think your hair looks great.

But if you wanted you could subtly tone it. That is a big benefit of being grey!

Mainly though I have replied because of your cat. What a cuddler.

Tidsleytiddy · 07/02/2023 21:39

The cat’s thinking “why has her face been scribbled over”

OneFrenchEgg · 07/02/2023 21:45

I'd probably change tThe parting and create more of a sweepy fringe over to the left (your left).

MaverickGooseGoose · 07/02/2023 21:48

Purple timer will make it more silver, I'm 50% grey with cruelly streaks, the purple makes it
Shiny

Arrrrrrragghhh · 07/02/2023 21:50

Colours nice. I don’t think the style is doing you any favours. It says given up middle aged. I reckon a bit longer and a bit flickier with a long fringe maybe?

mm47 · 07/02/2023 21:51

I think your hair looks fantastic. (I have similar hair so am biased ie a whiteish flash at the front parting, streaks of grey at the front and then pretty much dark mouse at the back.). I wonder whether the best colours to wear closer to your face have changed? Not so much because of your hair colour but because I think our overall colouring changes (not just hair, but skin as well) - so maybe it might be easier and less upkeep to investigate which are the most flattering colours for you now . (Nb I am not a colour consultant!)

LuluBlakey1 · 07/02/2023 21:54

I think your hair colour is lovely as it is.

thewinterwitch · 07/02/2023 21:56

What a great cat! I think your hair looks great as is, also. Maybe use some of that shampoo that's designed to bring out the silver/ashy tones in when you wash it.

Buymyselfflowers · 07/02/2023 21:57

What about a semi-permanent colour, natural light brown maybe?

RustyBear · 07/02/2023 22:03

I have similar hair to yours, though I seem to have a bit more silver. But I’m 11 years older than you, and 10 years ago it was very much the same as yours, and hairdressers always tell me how lucky I am to have hair going grey like mine.
Your hair might actually look more silver if you cut it short -the picture on the left is my lockdown hair, the one on the right was taken the next day, after my haircut

Wow I wasn't expecting so many replies.
In daylight my hair is whiter than it looks here.. the front is very white and the top grey .. and doesn't usually look quite that tatty Grin
I went from waist length hair this summer to short hair in November.. and yes I regret it but was bored with dealing with it. Too chicken to go shorter and a bit worried a fringe would give me a lego head.

Maybe I'll try a toner before I do anything drastic.

The cat... (star of the show obviously) is a street stray!!! Me and a couple of neighbours had been feeding him for years after someone moved away and left him. But we couldn't get close to him. Then he got so ill I was able to grab him and take him to a vet..no chip, so had him patched up, neutered etc. Gradually he started to trust me, then 2 years ago this month he walked in...and stayed Grin
He loves only me, beats the dog up, and bites me at least once a day...but he's now fat, glossy (with great hair !) and loved...

Ohh your hair colour is really lovely, a toner could really bring out the shades in it.

OneFrenchEgg · 07/02/2023 22:39

Hi op I meant something like this, not a blunt traditional fringe.

What purple toner do you recommend ? I’ve tried the Bleach London silver It’s very purple and stains my shower curtain. But it’s a shampoo and conditioner so not intense on the hair. A Veda Blue Malva softens but no real colour .
I want to brighten mine up but I think blonde would look dirty on mine !

OneFrenchEgg · 08/02/2023 12:24

I love milkshake purple conditioner and also Daddy O from Lush (shampoo).

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/02/2023 14:00

I think it's lovely.

TreesAtSea · 08/02/2023 16:04

I think the colour is fine. Mine is similar, though probably more like@RustyBear. Dyed mine for 25 yrs then stopped around 18 months ago. I know some women prefer a more uniform silver or grey colour, but I love the variations.

ClaudiaNaughton · 08/02/2023 17:08

That amazing sounding L’Oréal beige toner seems to be out of stock everywhere.

Irrelevantdata · 08/02/2023 17:22

Your cat's backstory makes him even more the star of the show, how lovely that he's landed so firmly on his paws with you ❤️ And I agree your hair looks lovely as it is.

2Bornot · 08/02/2023 17:49

Mine was like that. Everyone kept telling me the white front looked fab and was fashionable but on me. Teuth isnit was so ageing. Eventually I put semi-permanent in my original dark brown all over it and it looks fab and everyone keeps telling me how much younger I look.

Other options could be highlighs or lowlights but they won’t give you the glorious sheen of semi-permanent dye…
