Registry Office Dress

Hi im looking for a dress to wear for my registry office wedding. Im 55 and its just us two and two witnesses. Im 5.6 and curvy. Maybe a bit top heavy. Its litererally the 15 min legal ceremony and a meal afterwards. We go on a lovely honeymoon the next day so want to save money for new clothes for that. I have bought a dress from coast in the sale and while its suitable i dont really love it. I am a jeans and top person and feel uncomfortable in a dress unless its with black tights in winter.
Any suggestions? Budget low only up to £100

Could you show us the coast dress and say what you don't like about it?

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 07/02/2023 18:49

Congratulations! Monsoon is good for occasion wear. When is the wedding?

WeAreTheHeroes · 07/02/2023 18:51

What about a jumpsuit or trousers and a jacket instead if you're not comfortable in an occasion dress?

TheLastDreamOfTheOak · 07/02/2023 18:53

I wore this for my registry office wedding and lunch after in November. Im your height and also quite curvy and it sat really well. It's quite heavy as subtle sequins. It was from Harvey Nichols online. (Though I'm flogging this one-only one once Wink if you fancy it SmileGrin)

It looks ok on but just ok and not that comfy. I like the thought of a jacket though.. would a jacket work with that dress?

Coast dress is gorgeous and would flatter most body types . If you dislike your lower legs try the pointy closed shoe to elongate and wear something eye catching in your hair make up bag etc

Binbags · 07/02/2023 19:02

Speak to a seamstress about why it’s not comfortable and they can usually do something. It is a lovely dress but simple so you’ll need to accessorise.

Moversnotshakers · 07/02/2023 19:09

Yeah i guess i did try it on with messy hair and black work socks!!! I think i wanted something with a longer sleeve as my arms arent great but i guess its only for one day and i got it for £37!! Think i just needed reassurance- thanks

Another gorgeous coat

I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think? https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-erica-davies-floral-jacquard-coat-pink-black-mix/p6358989?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&sshare=jlappioss_Y29tLmFwcGxlLlVJS2l0LmFjdGl2aXR5LkNvcHlUb1Bhc3RlYm9hcmQ=

How about a wrap to cover your arms and M&S shaping tights give confidence, if you are wearing sandals get toe less tights. I love that dress

Fenella123 · 07/02/2023 19:22

You could drape a scarf or shawl around your arms or ..?

ReamsOfCheese · 07/02/2023 19:25

I was going to suggest something just like your Coast dress, it's gorgeous!

Binbags · 07/02/2023 19:27

What about a veil that drapes the shoulders ?
Here

Congratulations!

I would hire something. £100 isn’t enough to buy a really special new dress for a grown up - and you’ll want the photos to last forever.

This place seems to be recommended often:

Thank you all for the suggestions. Still unsure and will probably stick to what i have with accessories/ shawl/wrap and fabulous shoes. Its 30th May and hoping its warm... its only one day and 2nd time around... x

I got married in October (I was 52 then, 53 now!). Small registry office do and then a meal in restaurant, just 9 guests. I spent ages trying to find a dress I liked with a low budget but in the end I gave up as I just couldn't find anything that I loved. Eventually, after lots of persuading from friends to try it, I bought this, the most expensive clothing item I have ever bought in my life! But I can wear it again to other occasional posh events in the future and I felt very special on the day. Even better, it is washable and silk, so I didn't need to have it dry cleaned. www.lkbennett.com/product/DRGABRIELLESILKMIXCreamCream%20Tan%20Multi~Gabrielle-Red-And-Cream-Graphic-Print-Silk-Midi-Dress-Cream%20Tan%20Multi

Just to add, I also got this gorgeous wrap cardigan from someone who makes them and sells them on Etsy. I have worn it since and it was much less formal than a jacket and lovely to wear over my dress. I would definitely recommend her and there are different colours: www.etsy.com/uk/listing/734383376/ivory-brushed-alpaca-silk-cardigan-ivory

Have you looked on vinted? You can look for brand new with tags and there were loads of really nice dresses

FortunateCatsGlugDaquirisAllEveningBlindly · 22/02/2023 18:35

I was actually going to suggest eBay or a charity shop. I got married in a registry office and wore a plain cream shift dress I found in a charity shop and cream heels. As someone suggested my hair was the focus with lots of cream rosebuds pinned into it.
I’m your height and top heavy too. I know they don’t sell clothes anymore but Bravissimo/Pepperberry and if you can find them second hand or in a sale BombshellUK do have nice stuff.

Juleslovesmaths · 22/02/2023 18:47

Try sea salt they do lovely long dresses which are really comfortable

ThistleTits · 22/02/2023 19:17

@Moversnotshakers
Get a nice linen suite. Do you for honeymoon too. Or try hiring one or pre loved.

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 23/02/2023 00:05

I got my dress from Chi Chi, they do all sorts of styles.

FortunateCatsGlugDaquirisAllEveningBlindly · 23/02/2023 08:21

Seems to be a lot on eBay from Bombshell UK, I was lusting after this one
