I'm wanting a new haircut, currently just on shoulders and is fairly thick and wavy. Im 60, short size 14 with a round face. I usually have a variation on a long Bob, would like something stylish that doesn't look too try hard, but also doesn't look like the uniform mum Bob. Any ideas?

Photo?

Imtoooldforallthis · 05/02/2023 19:20

I can't attach photos on my phone unfortunately.

How about an Italian bob? (Basically a long bob but you can look up pictures online.) I think the length would be quite flattering. Would need a good hairdresser.

Imtoooldforallthis · 05/02/2023 19:48

Not dissimilar to what I've got know which is a bit ordinary.

What about an inverted bob?

Judi dench pixie ?

Imtoooldforallthis · 05/02/2023 20:18

I would love a pixie but worried it would look too harsh on me.

I don't actually mind looking my age, but would love to look cool, and have a look rather than being bland.

I’d go for an Italian or 90s Bob - see here:

(I personally find the inverted bob shown above dated and aging)

That's not far off what I've got now and looks very ordinary on me.

Go for a pixie. I’ve got one (currently pink, don’t ask) and what I love about it is that I automatically have a ‘look’ without having to make much effort.

A pixie doesn’t have to be harsh. If your hair is wavy, it will have life to it and a bit of root lift, so it’s not as if you’ll end up with a short back and sides.

I spend literally seconds on my hair every day, and I’m so happy with it!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 06/02/2023 09:20

If you've got waves (lucky you!), I'd go for a French bob.

I think to look modern it needs to be a bit messy, so it looks more nonchalant. That sort of blow-dried bob can look a bit neat and officey, if you know what I mean.

Alexa Chung’s hair here is nice too - pretty but messy. Would work slightly longer too, if you didn’t want to go quite as short, although I love this length.

Looking for ideas as well. I’m growing a pixie and it’s currently shoulder length. I’ve got stuck, everything looks boring or messy. I have slightly wavy hair, it’s easy to look messy. I’ve had a fringe cut into it but I don’t want to end up with a bun.

LadyWithLapdog · 06/02/2023 09:59

This is about as good as I could find (I know it’s helped by amazing colour, skin, youth, filters etc).

Or this, though potential to go very wrong very quickly.

Side fringe? (Thinking Emma Stone)

They are all beautiful, not 60 year old and slightly over weight..

I always put my thumb over the face in the pictures and imagine my face instead. It’s usually a no!

That’s why Emma Willis looks fab even with boyish short dark hair but I would look awful.

You could do the wavy layered bob if your hair has a curl to it?

I always like Alex Jones’ (One Show) hair which is always a variation on a bob.

jackstini · 06/02/2023 11:37

Is your hair wavy, poker straight, curly?
What colour and do you want to keep it?

I like this

Slightly messy on 'Styled to within an inch of her life' Alexa Chung has the potential to look 'frazzled bag lady' on a 60+ year old, though.

I mean no offense, OP. I'm in my early 50s and finding that I have to look 'done' to a certain degree in hair and make up to indicate I'm in control of what's happening to my overweight, menopausal body. I can no longer shove my hair up in a clip and hope to look adorably tousled.

I also have a round face, and a long sideways fringe is what helps take the edge off for me. Could you consider getting one cut in?

I think pixies can look fabulous, but I also think that they bring their own set of problems like potentially needing to reconsider what make up you wear/ having to have more regular cuts.

My point exactly.

I’m in my 50s and asked for exactly this - short messy Alexa Chung bob - she blow-dried it to within an inch of its life and it looked horrendous. Once I got home and mussed it up a bit it was fine; the cut is good, with blunt ends, so it doesn’t look bag lady at all.

Maybe have a play around with potential looks on a free try-on-hairstyles mobile app?
