What to wear other than jeans

I'm 44, size 12/14 but have short dumpy legs. I usually wear tracksuit bottoms or jeans. I want to look a bit more dressy but still casual and comfortable What can I wear?
I don't wear heels, I have short hair and not very girly. I thought about a dress but I'm not sure what is even in fashion and I'm only 5'1 and the fat legs don't look great on display with trainers! Any ideas?

I'm watching with interest. I've recent bought a couple of midi length jumper dresses which I like but am interested in other options.

I don't think it's worth worrying about what is in fashion. Consider what you like and what looks good on you. Personally I like black leggings and jumper dresses- comfy and warm for the current weather.

Wide leg leather trousers are a great option, you can still wear with a casual outfit but they are more comfy than jeans and look more polished.

daniyala · 30/01/2023 11:52

I don't believe it merits agonizing over what is in fashion. Consider what you like and what looks great on you Wide leg leather and trousers are a good option for you because its so comfortable as you are 44

Uniqlo wide leg cords are a good find for me recently and make a nice change from jeans.

Lallyhead1 · 30/01/2023 12:43

@PaulRobinsonsSeventhWife cords are a good shout actually. Think I'll definitely look for some wide leg trousers too

Agree with some good fitted trousers and for the feet, try brogues or loafers.

midsomermurderess · 30/01/2023 14:05

I have some cords from Poetry. They do cropped and straight-legged ones too.

I have the same dilemma, I live in jeans and leggings but would like to branch out. I also have stumpy legs.

On me I find dresses and skirts look best with black tights and boots - I have these already but not the dresses or skirts! eurochick where are your dresses from please, sound good?

I’m wondering about a shortish slightly A line skirt like this with tights and boots. Almost what I wore in my teens in the 90s Grin. I already have a big collection of tops and jumpers that I wear with jeans so expect they’d go with this kind of skirt too.

I would love a swishy winter maxi skirt in wool or similar but can’t find one that looks the right shape/length (I’m 5’3 so maxis are tricky).

Have you considered leather-look leggings for when you want to dress up a bit? I HATE my legs at the minute and didn't think they'd suit me at all - but I tried on a pair of M&S ones and they were incredibly soft and comfy, and they looked good, much to my shock! I wear them with a big long-length fluffy jumper.

ChatSamosa · 30/01/2023 15:33

Wide leg trousers? I got bored of leggings and jeans. I avoid wearing dresses/tights outside of work (my uniform)

They look smart and can be dressed up or down. I've found a great selection and M&S.

FinallyHere · 30/01/2023 15:35

Another vote for the M&S high waisted leather look leggings. V v flattering, easy to dress up with heels or down with trainers. Enjoy.

SummaLuvin · 30/01/2023 15:40

I have these trousers and wear them all the time. They can be dressed up or down, and I find them really flattering on my body.

I also love the look of a satin slip skirt with a split, but I haven't found one that works for my waist/hip/bum proportions yet.

IWasFunBeforeMum · 30/01/2023 17:44

Mid calf dress, tights, DMs

SquirrelFan · 30/01/2023 20:05

Thirding cords - I have a pair of the seasalt wide leg ones and they are very comfy - and loose enough so I can wear thermal leggings underneath for very cold days.
