Day and night out - outfit ideas wanted

Going to London with newish boyfriend. We’re going to do a little bit of shopping and touristy bits in the afternoon, then dinner somewhere nice and stylish but not formal, then Cirque du Soleil in the evening. I’d like to be dressed up a bit for dinner and the show, just because I fancy it, but don’t want to be OTT in the day time! I’m going to end up in “jeans and a nice top” territory I feel - any more imaginative ideas? Don’t mind buying something new if I see something I love. (52, 5’8”, size 12 btw!)

So, one outfit, or two? I mean, will you be dropping all your shopping at a hotel, and getting changed, before dinner? Or otherwise?

CalebWomble · 28/01/2023 23:23

Oh yeah, one outfit, day trip only. Otherwise I could get changed and I’d be dithering less.

You definitely can’t stretch to overnight? It’s going to be so exhausting otherwise - and such a pain taking shopping to a restaurant and a show …

(Sorry, I know this isn’t what you asked, but dragging bags around London is miserable.)

Dress, boots, biker jacket

It’s not really a shopping trip, I’m not expecting we’ll buy anything that won’t fit in a handbag. I don’t think it’s going to be exhausting, probably won’t even go until about 2 o’clock!

Short dress - with boots and camel coat?

Or leather dress (unbuttoned for evening) with wool jacket?

Ponte knit nice fitting trousers and cardigan (based on temp with a base layer)
I find dresses too chilly on the legs and coats with belts a real hassle.

Leather trousers, in my book, easily beats any jeans and tee combo. Thinking paired with comfortable booties, bucket bag and a wool coat.
you could have a shirt underneath a sweater and take the sweater off in the evening, wearing it as a scarf. Shirt slightly unbuttoned with lounger layered necklaces.

You need to be comfortable and understated. It can be hot and blowy (and not to mention filthy) on the underground so I wouldn't wear big coats or leather trousers to travel around London.

There are loads of really lovely wide leg trousers around at the moment, which are both flattering and comfortable for a long day out that goes from day to evening. I'd team them with a tank top and a blouse with statement sleeves. Mint velvet do some gorgeous ones. The sleeves will take your outfit up a notch at dinner and the theatre. And some beautiful earrings will make you feel dressed up.

Wear chunky comfortable boots or shoes you're happy to walk in and depending on the weather either a smart blazer or showerproof coat with a cross your body bag that'll hold any goodies you buy.

Just out of interest, what is your date likely to west? If he's going to turn up in jeans and a top, why can't you?

Wear!

I mean, plenty of Londoners do 😂but I get what you mean! Even just going in and out of places, getting hot/cold etc is a pain.

Hadn't given him a moment's thought tbh 😂😂😂 God knows what he'll wear. Nothing overly fancy! We're past the point where I'm trying to dress up to impress him, I'm just excited about a proper night out in London 😁

Having a look at Mint Velvet now, I always like them, should have looked for inspiration earlier. Thanks x

I definitely wouldn't wear leather trousers. London is always warmer than I expect it to be.

I'd also want to know if it was likely to rain. If wet, I'd far prefer a dress/skirt to jeans or wide legged trousers.
