To ask for your go to auburn box hair dye

Hi all

I've been dying my hair auburn for a few years now (really can't afford hairdressers as often as I need it)

I'm getting more and more grey and finding the dye just doesn't last very long

I'm after good grey coverage and a real red auburn not the shades that go into purple

For those of you who home dye, what brand and shade do you find looks great, covers greys and lasts more than a few washes?

Thanks so much!

Have you considered henna?

AnchorWHAT · 22/01/2023 12:25

I have a darkish auburn head of hair and usually buy Preference 645 Brooklyn Copper Auburn but it doesn't seem to last very long on my greys, recently i tried the ultra cheap superdrug Performance Permanent Hair Dye Light Auburn 7.04 which i really liked, its darker than it suggests being called light though.

Henna. Bonus that it gives your hair amazing condition.

Thanks so much all. Silly question but how long does Henna last and does it really cover greys? I remember using it in my youth but thought it wasn't very long lasting?

Thanks so much - I'll have a look into superdrug own brand now

If you apply it properly it will cover greys and, in my experience, lasts about a month before fading - it fades out to a golden shade on greys. The main issue with it is that you have to leave it on for at least 5 hours for it to take on greys, and it's messy, so overall it's less convenient than a box dye, but the plus sides are the natural red tones, the conditioning effect it has on your hair, and no stink of ammonia/peroxide etc.

nowtygaffer · 22/01/2023 14:25

I only leave mine on for 2 hours and it covers the grey fine.

Do your hair with henna and you can kiss goodbye to having any other dye on again.

Do you mean because of the allergy problems or because it's so good?

Yes as above poster! Is this a warning or an endorsement 😬

I used to use Lush henna and found it was more that your roots grow than it faded. I also liked that you could make up your own colour, and that it coats the hair so your hair incredibly soft for ages.

The 2 big negatives are:
It's time consuming and messy
The lovely coating on your hair means normal dye won't take so you just have to grow it out

FidgetWonkham · 22/01/2023 15:05

I used Josh Wood colour and found that very good compared with many other box dyes.
I’ve let my natural grey come through now though.

JenniferWooley · 22/01/2023 18:22

I use this nice n easy one & get this colour which is quite a bit lighter & brighter than the colour looks on the pack, it does fade but more to a dark strawberry blonde & I use the Superdrug wash in/wash out to give it a boost between colouring.

Everyone I've met since going this colour thinks it's my natural colour.

I will second that if you use henna you will be stuck with the orange pigment on your hair and there is no removing it.

The trick is to choose permanent hair dye with ammonia if you want to cover greys well.

Since I’m a brunette I can’t really recommend a specific auburn dye, but wanted to share the 2 bits of info above.
