My lovely husband has booked us to go to afternoon tea at the Ritz for my birthday so I want something nice to wear. I’m five foot, 11 stone (yes I know 😢) and have a bit of a tummy. I bought something from Boden which I’m just about to send back as it made me look quite dumpy. If anyone has any ideas that would be great. Bonus points if you’re similar dimensions and have got something in your wardrobe that looks fab. I could go up to £100 (ish).

I like V necks and boat neck styles. Ideally I’d like a dress but would consider something like capri trousers and a smart top.

Thanks!

This might be fun. Maybe with some long boots.

Or

this?

Several variations on that shape on the site.

WhoppingBigBackside · 20/01/2023 19:43

When is your birthday?
Nice birthday treat. Lucky you.

DerangedViper · 20/01/2023 19:46

You sound exactly the same shape as my lovely friend.

Do you happen to like 50s styles? She looks fab in them

WhoppingBigBackside · 20/01/2023 19:49

That's a great idea @DerangedViper .I sort of thought tea dress but can't think of where to get one.

@Lockdownmummy , thanks! This is great. I posted originally as the thread was near the bottom of the page and thought it could do with a bump

Joe Browns do a great range of dresses that suit those who are not willowy.

Ooh, this sounds like the moment for one of those John Lewis personal stylist appointments I first read about on MN. (I’ve been twice now and it was very convenient compared to traipsing round the store myself feeling uninspired and guessing at whether brands run large or small)

KirstenBlest · 21/01/2023 09:22

Lindy Bop might have something vintagey, but you'd be looking at 2nd hand.

Salacia · 21/01/2023 11:34

With a budget of £100 you should be able to get something lovely in the sales that makes the occasion even more special! I’d look on a site like wolf and badger and get a feel for what styles jump out at you (plus it’s a bit more exciting than boden). What colours suit you? You’ve mentioned your tummy but what are your favourite bits? What size? I think as it’s a special occasion you deserve something really special! Here are some ideas going purely off your preferred neckline and budget. Have gone for a bit of a range of styles as wasn’t sure what would appeal…
70s/ruffled glamour
simple black wrap
classic tea dress
heart print
vintage style shirt dress
Printed maxi
More summery maxi - they have this in loads of prints/colours if you like it
30s style

Or if you like the vintage look then you could check the Nancy Mac sale as there’s stuff in your budget. This (although a little over budget!) could look gorgeous, especially if you’re going soon/in the winter. If you’re going later in the year then there are more summery options - more of a 50s vibe?

KirstenBlest · 21/01/2023 11:39

Some nice ideas there @Salacia ! hastily closes the Wolf & Bagder tab

@WigglyGlowWorm , get something you feel fabulous in and have a lovely time with your DH.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/01/2023 14:28

When are you going? If soon, I'd avoid anything too summery looking.

Mikki77 · 28/01/2023 18:30

Were you wanting to wear heels or flats OP? I have absolutely no idea what I'd wear for this kind of thing any more but I tend to go for flats nowadays - maybe wide-leg trousers and some flat leather pointed-toe pumps, and a cashmere jumper. Do you have a coat you're looking to wear with it?

Guavafish1 · 29/01/2023 04:50

Ebay- vintage
