What to ask for for a non-boring bob?

Feeling a bit meh. Could do with a haircut and I'm sure I could have a bob that is more stylish but I don't know what to ask for!
Early 40s, round of face, very fine hair currently cut into a boring but easy to manage bob that's around chin length or a bit longer.

What do I ask for to make it a bit more updated?

I don't know but will be watching as I am interested too

tootiredtoo · 18/01/2023 19:56

Long fringe that you can part, and layers?

tootiredtoo · 18/01/2023 19:57

Kind of like this (just did a quick google).

I've had a bob for years but just tried a new hairdresser, asymmetric bob, past my chin, short (undercut) into the nape of my neck but with the back of my hair hanging slightly over the short undercut, side parting, long fringe but she's cut my hair so it doesn't curl under but is straight and swinging when I move my head, taken years off me.
I like the photo posted previously but it looks like a lot of upkeep

Choppy wolf cut?

OriginalUsername2 · 18/01/2023 20:11

Ask them to make it a bit higher at the back than the front. It makes all the difference!

Justkoko · 18/01/2023 20:25

What's a wolf cut?!

I like the picture above but my hair wouldn't hold the volume!

Just looked up a wolf cut, I would end up with a mullet, I'm not edgy enough!

What do you mean? Like a stack bob?

deltablue · 18/01/2023 22:29

Wolf cut

SnackyOnassis · 18/01/2023 22:32

Ooh the Italian bob sounds like what you're after. Deliberately low maintenance, full, natural and elegant.

TightFistedWozerk · 18/01/2023 22:34

A choppy bob might get you what you're after especially if they cut it with a razor.

AwfulTed · 18/01/2023 22:35

Don’t do anything too drastic. I was restless, got a fringe and looked like Brian Cox …

Thon · 18/01/2023 22:35

Bobs are boring. Don’t go shorter and don’t get layers if it’s fine. Grow it to shoulder length (much more flattering for a round face) and ask for a blunt cut each time

Always looks like a duck’s arse to me 🦆

I've never heard of an Italian bob. I googled it and it's what I always had when I had shorter hair. I love that blunt 'chopped with shears' look. Chunky, blunt and in between chin and shoulder

IaminRome · 18/01/2023 22:53

I feel your pain. I'm same - round face, fine hair.
Anything I do to it style wise just falls out as I have straighter than straight hair and it's thinning!

Next time you go ask for an inverted bob. You will be rreally pleased you did. Look up images on the 'net

CleanBedding · 19/01/2023 11:45

I think inverted bobs are quite dated now and can slip into 'talk to the manager' territory if you're not careful.

How about changing how you style your hair instead? I smooth and wave mine with straighteners and it creates a completely different look to when I blow dry it. Bit like in this picture but longer.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 19/01/2023 12:39

I have very straight hair that does not hold waves etc. so I get my hairdresser to cut it all one length. Long bob, centre parting and no layers! He uses a clippers rather than a scissors so it has a very sharp line.

Justkoko · 19/01/2023 16:18

If I put waves or any type of curl in it just drops out very quickly. It's fine, soft and flyaway. If I put mousse in at the roots it will hold a bit of volume though.
Italian bob looks very manageable, not dissimilar to what I have though more blunt.

I'd have thought it'd give me triangle head😆.
Also, I don't have a long elegant neck like most of the models with these gorgeous hair dos. Which makes getting the length right tricky . I need to give the illusion of a neck. I'm just kind of short and wide, like an inverted supermodel 🤣.

I'm sure there is some rule about proportions which helps to understand why long hair looks absolutely terrible on me, and always has, even since being a teenager. I can't put my finger on why, but it does.

Get a side fringe and some highlights to give depth

trieditbuyedit · 19/01/2023 20:51

Maybe boring but my fine, flyaway hair always looks best with a 'blunt, bevelled bob'

What to ask for for a non-boring bob?
SolitudeNotLoneliness · 23/01/2023 10:53

Why are bobs either boring or 'talk to the manager'?

Why is a normal bob boring but a bob that's not poker straight bang on trend?

Op, talk to your hairdresser, loads of options, long pixies, bixies, Italian bobs, inverted, layered, stacked... Go for what you like rather than following a trend that might not suit.
