Brow/lash dye - is it just me, or…

…do these just not work any more? I’ve done my own tinting for 20 plus years but for the past year or so I’m always disappointed. Looks okay/dark on the first day but back to normal by day 2 ish.

Have formulations changed (like they did to the fantastic Color Sport many years ago which made it total rubbish)? Have tried eyelure and refectocil recently, and had them done at a salon to no avail.

Anyone got any good reccs or words or wisdom please? (I always have clean lashes/brows, leave it on for yonks, make sure it’s not too cold, replace old stuff).

I would just like my facial features back!!

I had mine tinted in a salon for the first time a few months ago and I was really disappointed too - it barely had an effect and was gone within a day.

Gridhopper · 16/01/2023 20:45

@BettyOBarley V disappointing for you! Not just me then…

It's not just you it's crap these days

VinoDino · 16/01/2023 20:49

I tint my own using the Strictly Professional brand and it's pretty decent. I get it off Amazon/EBay. Don't rate Julienne. Buy the developer separately.

GreyTS · 16/01/2023 20:52

Yes! I feel like I'm going mad, 2 days later and all colour is gone

silverclock222 · 16/01/2023 21:01

Since lockdown I've been buying "Just for men Moustache & Beard Medium Brown Dye". Currently £5 in Lloyds Pharmacy. Lasts about 6 or 7 uses!

crispinglovershighkick · 16/01/2023 23:17

Have you tried tinting twice? Just go through the whole procedure two times in a row. I don't leave it for longer than the directions say to, I just remove and reapply.
I have some greys so a tint wouldn't last more than a couple of days if I didn't tint twice. Lasts a few weeks now.
Next time I'm going to try presoftening (like you do for tinting resistant hair, which just uses peroxide first) and if that works it'll make the dye go a bit further.

AnnieSnap · 16/01/2023 23:38

I wonder if they have had to remove an ingredient that has become illegal to use 🤔

Ladybirdbookworm · 17/01/2023 00:52

Another one here recommending just for men beard dye.
so much easier, cheaper and better results

Toomuchtoolong · 17/01/2023 00:54

The formula in eyelids has changed, the consistency too! I noticed it now says up to 15mins to leave on whereas my last bottle said up to 3-6mins. I did it twice last week 15 mins each and barely there, will try the beard dye next for sure!

Christmascracker0 · 17/01/2023 01:16

Try Rofectil - it’s the brand they use in the salons! The other brands you get in Boots etc just doesn’t stick for me, but this stuff is great and lasts ages. You can use it for brows and lashes.

Thanks everyone!

I had heard about the Just for Men idea - do you venture near lashes with this or just brows?

Going to try the do it twice plan and possibly order the strictly prof stuff. Though I suspect you’re right about the ingredients @AnnieSnap

Another vote for the beard dye. Not sure about lashes though, I only do my brows.

silverclock222 · 17/01/2023 07:57

Never tried lashes sorry!

Gridhopper · 17/01/2023 08:01

@TheWristBoundLatexBitch @silverclock222 Thanks, I suspect the answer is of course you don’t put hair dye in your eyes but thought I’d ask!

As recommended here I tried Just for Men (medium brown) on my brows this weekend and so far so good. It's managed to cover everything including the odd white hair. It's good and dark if that's what you're looking for, those with more delicate colouring should proceed with caution. Thanks for the tip!

tobee · 14/02/2023 17:57

At home I use Godefroy and it's pretty good but I use it twice (do it once and then immediately again) to build colour. Have had reactions to another brand.

Sometimes coming out of the salon it's more the other way round. I feel like Gerald the baby from The Simpsons
