What do people wear nowadays?

I’m early 30’s. Youngest is 6 months and feel like I’m just starting to coming out of the other side of the baby fog. I have a few meet ups with friends over the next couple of months, mainly drinks/meals in the city and I have NO idea what to wear. I would really like to look nice/smart for once.

I’ve spent the last 4 years in soft play/Morrison's. Due to a combination of this and lockdown my daily uniform tends to be leggings and long tops. I’m short. I’m also skint.

One thing I do have going for me is a good hourglass figure, size 8 top and bottom. I think my colours are cool summer.

Any suggestions of what to wear?! Last time I went out I felt about 10 years out of date. I do have lots of clothes from my old life vac-packed away so could potentially drag some of those out and create some new combinations with one new key piece.

It might be worth getting those pieces out and looking on Pinterest. I’d suggest maybe choosing the key pieces from the things you have stored that you like and trying to focus on them and building an outfit around one or more of them. Sometimes it could just be an accessory that you need to update your outfit. I’d suggest looking in charity shops too for anything that would potentially provide an update.

I'm the exact same! Not a clue what to wear anymore.

Do you have tiktok? I've started following a few women on there. I searched for stylish mums.

Are you on Facebook? Join style me happy. It’s a good page. I am also a cool summer hourglass. I struggle too because my work uniform is safety boots. Black jeans, jumper, t shirt and jacket and a high viz!

I find Vinted good to pick up some second hand pieces.

Being out last night from posh place at first to low key pub / diner afterwards, I really would say whatever you want. There was the full mix of styles- jumper Jean trainers, long dress & boots, jeans with nice tops, leggings & shirts. Some wearing platforms, heels, chunky boots, ballet slipper type shoes...literally everything and anything.

Put together something that you feel most comfortable in and you'll rock it!

Any trousers that are high waisted and not skinny (straight, tapered, wide leg all fine). Then a top that is slightly cropped (or you could just tuck a regular top in at the front middle for a similar effect). Shoes slightly chunky, flat or low heeled. Oversize jumpers (in a modern Breton style if you like).

Agree with PP. If you haven’t got any, get a pair of non skinny jeans and then tuck your tops in. French tuck maybe. Shorten the jeans if they need it so they hit around the ankle. Then an oversized blazer or cardigan or bomber. You don’t need much to look more elevated as so many people are wearing active wear/leggings. And it can be easy to look overdone in our new very casual world.

A nice coat is a good buy as you wear those a lot at this time of year and puffas and casual coats always downgrade an outfit (but are much more practical).

Personally I think fashion has become a lot more minimalist. Plain, neutral clothes, often same colour worn top and bottom, very few prints (maybe leopard), no fussy accessories like indoor scarves or jazzy socks or big necklaces. That’s not that hard a look to pull off but it’s quite boring.

Whatever the fuck I want.
And it's glorious 😆

You seldom go wrong with jeans.

sunglassesonthetable · 14/01/2023 11:24

2nd hand is the way to go. Seriously Vinted and Depop are great places to get good stuff.

I would put my money into good footwear and coat and hair . And focus on everyday clothes.

Good boots or trainers you can wear with everything ( loads around ) and a good outer layer you can sling on and feel pulled together. In this country we need an outer layer most of the time.

Obviously you have your own style but think of it as building blocks. After the shoes and coat fill in with jeans/trousers/skirts you like. And then some tops that go with those.

Look on Pinterest for looks you like. Personally I'm jeans/shirt and jeans/jumper with trousers for more formal. Boots and trainers. Wet weather coat or cold weather coat.

Wear whatever you like obviously but it helps to look at it as a whole.

I remember coming out of those baby years OP . I think you just need a bit of mental energy to re group.

dear god woman! just wear what you want to and what you feel comfortable in? Are we really still trying to ‘fit in with fashion’? sounds like you have an amazing body, wear what will flatter your curves. posts like this make me feel quite sad.
