Work trousers (for those of a bigger hip)

Hereforthedramaz · 13/01/2023 11:11

Hi,

I'd be really interested in any good office type trousers people have or have seen.

I have a difficult body shape for trousers, always have. Skinny jeans are the only trousers I've ever really liked wearing.

I'm 5"3
Big- ish hips
An Ill defined hourglass shape

Chino style cuts me in exactly the wrong place on the waist.

Anything with a pocket on the hip makes my hips look huge.

Paper bag waists look awful and I don't love having to tuck everything in anyway.

I live in jeans but work is now getting a little more in person meeting heavy and I would normally do skirts and dresses but I'd like to just have some plan black trousers to wear with little jumpers instead.

I'm trying to go down the "buy better less frequently route" so happy to look at nicer brands

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I bought the Hucker pants from Plumo - massive baggy cuffed wool trousers in a sort of exaggerated '30s slacks shape. Probably a bit Marmite but they're so easy to wear, with or without tucking in tops. They're unlined wool though, so a bit scratchy and not that easy to care for. But have been a good purchase for me.

Might not be what you are looking for but just before I finished work for good 3 years ago😃 I bought some thick jersey pull on trousers from M&S.
Completely flat around my waist and bulgy tummy so I could wear a shorter top or cardi, nice slimmish but not clingy legs and long enough so I could wear them with a chunky 3 inch heeled boot. Washed beautifully and didn't bobble or fade so looked really smart.

These are amazing but I know I'd looked swamped in them!

I'm envious that you can pull of this style though!

I'm not sure I do pull it off to be honest 😂 but at least they're a definite statement rather than 'please don't look at me' (which I do too much of, clothes-wise). Hope you find something!

IveForgottenAgainFFS · 13/01/2023 12:30

Next do some shape wear trousers, I bought them in an emergency situation but they're my favourite easy wear trousers. Thick jersey with quite a wool look to it, nip in at the waist with a stretch part to the waistband.

stickybear · 13/01/2023 12:31

I'm pear shaped and carry all of my weight in my hips, and I have some of the wide leg Richmond trousers from Boden. They're a good fit at the waist and over the hips and I find the width balances me out well. They're also slightly cropped so feel a bit more more up to date.

UpendedPineapple · 13/01/2023 12:36

Next straight leg - look slim fit on me 😳 but great for work and lots of lengths.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 13/01/2023 12:45

if you're big of hip M&S is your friend. Try to ignore some of the grim styling and photography on the website. i have these which as ever are much nice IRL. Quite a thick material so sort of skims nicely.

GillianJules1 · 13/01/2023 12:48

Hey stickybear I appear to have the same build as u and find it difficult to find the right pair of work trousers that flatter my build. I can sympathise with your concerns and I really hope you find trousers that agree with your unique figure. I also have been following a strict lower groin workout routine that has really helped with my sexual performance 😀

Hereforthedramaz · 13/01/2023 13:00

Thanks everyone, some really helpful points.

I'm in Birmingham tomorrow so I think a big trying on session in M&S and Next would be good and see what works.

Both will reliably off petit sizes which does make a difference for me.

@Hereforthedramaz following. Similar shape for me and I stupidly bought cropped trousers with button detailing and pockets and I look massive. I actually dont think skinny jeans work either. I think wide leg is the best to balance out a bit. Interested in Boden Richmond as have seen it mentioned a lot.

Iizzyb · 14/01/2023 08:01

I got some by Roman from Next. Fit really well

Hereforthedramaz · 14/01/2023 12:34

It does sound like the Boden Richmond would be worth a try, in fact they have a few nice looking shapes on the website.

I just wish they wouldn't automatically put pockets on the hip, it's really hard to find a pair without the pockets!

Turns out no Boden shop in Birmingham which I'm surprised about!

I am same height and shape and I find tapered trousers at a length that will show a slither of ankle above shoes look stylish and are flattering. I bought a pair of black tapered trousers from Oliver Bonas and they were fab.
They are now sold out but looked like this: www.next.de/en/style/st050451/u20246

Hereforthedramaz · 14/01/2023 16:36

M&S was a bust. They had a good selection but almost all had the problematic hip pockets, which just gap open.

These were the closest to looking good but didn't quite work.

I am slightly coming round to trying wide leg though, although it might be my height whixh is a problem with wide leg

Yes, I find a small slither of ankle looks best on me too.

Although 7/8 never are short on me! I usually have to buy cropped which are 7/8 on me

I have a pair of M&S wide leg trousers in short length and wear them to the office with a tucked in blouse and chunky white trainers (for an inch of height) and they look fab. Cheap as chips too and no pockets.

QueenMabs · 14/01/2023 19:32

I like tapered or peg trousers. Nipped in high waist, generous Ofer bum and thighs and narrow on the ankle. Usually 7/8.

Best ones I had were French connection.

Eve · 14/01/2023 20:53

You will possibly have to get these shortened - but I have had many pairs of these for work over the years - wash & wear well

i have a round tum rather than wide hips so avoid side pockets as well

I have the same problem and have just discovered Boden Hampshires, which come in both wide leg and 7/8 styles and a range of leg lengths and colours.

I've been trying to find flattering, machine washable work trousers for a long time, and I think these are finally it. The high elastane works for my wide hips/smaller waist and I prefer the fabric of these to the Richmonds. The Hampshire are a thick jersey material with high stretch and a slight sheen - not for everyone but I prefer it to the flat cotton finish of the Richmonds, which look frumpy and sag at the knees on me. They do have pockets but because of the high stretch they sit neatly and don't seem to sag open.

I ordered both the 7/8 and the wide leg options and kept them both though (unusually for my shape), the 7/8 are probably more flattering. A 20% offer just ended but am sure another will be along soon! I've only just discovered these so can't say how well they wash yet but otherwise would strongly recommend.
