Best non-purple shampoo for grey hair

I've got purple shampoo and conditioner but I can't always be arsed to sit around for 10/15 minutes with it on. I currently use Head and Shoulders as I read it was good for keeping the colour fresh but I still get yellow tints. Is there any other brand I can try? It's also really dry so anything moisturising would be a bonus. TIA.

I was always under the impression H&S was really harsh in the hair. Have you tried Kérastase?

CrumbsInMyBralette · 06/01/2023 14:31

No I haven't. I didn't know that about H&S but it would explain a lot!

Why don't you just use the purple shampoo and conditioner without sitting about for 10-15 minutes? I certainly find it the best thing for keeping my grey a nice colour.

I do have an intensive purple conditioner that I leave on longer sometimes, but mostly I just use the others as I would any other shampoo and conditioner.

Because I'm a stickler for a rule @Whitney168 😂

I use purple shampoo and conditioner, I leave the shampoo on while I'm washing my body so a minute or two; then I apply the conditioner, rub it in and rinse it off. I'd only leave it in for 10 minutes if I wanted a faint lilac tinge to my hair (which I don't!).

And yes, H&S is good for stripping colour if eg you've dyed your hair a few shades too dark. But far far too harsh to use all the time.

Honestly, the sky won't fall in ...

I use the Aussie one and like it.

I use Color Wow dream filter. You spray it on and leave for between 1-3 mins before washing. It is supposed to strip off mineral build up that can make the hair go brassy. Mine isn't brassy - though whether it would be if I didn't use the product I have no idea. Color Wow also sells purple styling foam, which might be an option.

CrumbsInMyBralette · 08/01/2023 01:04

@Els1e What is the Aussie one please?

It's not non-purple but Fanola no yellow shampoo is brilliant and you don't need to leave it in long at all for it to work.

Els1e · 08/01/2023 08:33

Sorry, it’s is purple but you only leave the shampoo for 3 mins. They suggest you sing at this point. I don’t bother to leave it, just rinse straight off. I’ve got more of a silver grey now. It’s Aussie SOS blonde hydration purple shampoo. Sorry can’t do a clicky link but if you Google it. It’s sold on Amazon, supermarkets etc. I usually pick it up in Boots, when 3 for £10. No parabens or sulphites too.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 08/01/2023 08:37

H&s is awful for hair/colour. Most supermarket brands are. If you want your colour to last ask your hairdresser for what shampoo/conditioner they use.

Purple shampoo you shouldn't use every wash anyway, once or twice a week maximum. And i've never heard about leaving it in for 10/15mins, mine stays in for 1 or 2 mins while i wash rest of body etc

SheWoreYellow · 08/01/2023 08:39

We have two purple shampoos and neither of them say to leave them on I don’t think? But a purple shampoo left on for 30 seconds will be more un-yellowing than a non purple shampoo. Just use the purple shampoos.

SheWoreYellow · 08/01/2023 08:41

Ive checked, the John Frieda one, Violet crush, says leave on for one minute.

SheWoreYellow · 08/01/2023 08:41

The Elvive one says 1-3.

Have you looked at White Hot Hair ? Their glorious shampoo is white but definitely keeps my greys nice . They also do a solid shampoo bar that's really great . Alternatively boots sell a shampoo called Klorane that's really nice . I use all of these but also find any white or clear shampoo is ok for mine .

SunnySomer · 08/01/2023 08:57

I use Aveda moisturising shampoo - no colour in it at all, but it makes my hair really soft. No yellowing, just clean and bright whites/greys

As I'm going greyer, I'm thinking of moving to a purple shampoo, but if I only wash my hair once or twice a week, would you use purple shampoo every time, or only a couple of times a month?
