Best/longest lasting red hair dye?

Hi all,

I've started dying my hair a bright(ish) red with this hair dye (hopefully the picture works, if not it's Garnier Vibrant Red). It looks great for the first week or so then starts to fade (the lower half of my hair is quite light due to previous bleaching so it turns a bit kind of orange).

Any suggestions for an alternative red dye/brand that holds its colour for a bit longer?

Thanks!

Red does fade really quickly, I’ve heard of some people topping up their colour with red food colouring before which I always meant to try but never did. I’m blonde now mostly because I couldn’t cope with the fading with my copper hair dye, though I loved it.

The best thing you can do is try not to wash it so often, and when you do, use a red hair shampoo and conditioner.

Have you considered using henna? I found it lasted really well, much better than commercial dyes. You don't get the control over the colour though, so perhaps it would be too orangey for you?

Reds tend to fade especially from bleached and / or damaged hair. Applying more and more permanent dye is actually not helping with the fading as developer always causes some more damage.

I really suggest using permanent dye for the root regrowth only and then top up your existing shade within the lengths with semi-permanent dyes (ones without developer, example Directions, Crazy Color or Schwarzkopf Live Ultra Brights). And of course as previously suggested try not to wash too often and use colour safe shampoos.
