Gift idea - skincare for 40’s skin which feels dry

I’m 47 & my skin feels dry & tight even after I apply moisturiser, I use an oil of olay one in a pot. I use cerave foaming wash as I like the feeling of cleaning my face with water.
I’d like to ask for some skincare products for Christmas to improve the tight feeling & feel more moisturised. I’ve had a look online but there are so many products & I need it not to be too complicated or I just won’t do it.
I like Clarins but have never had a moisturiser from them & I don’t want to make an expensive mistake.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I use Liz Earle Superskin moisturiser with Neroli. I’ve tried dropping down to their moisturiser, but skin felt dry/tight and had to go back to the Neroli.

Littlemiss74 · 19/12/2022 08:57

@KangarooKenny thank you what is Neroli? I don’t know whether its the central heating being on but my skin just feels so dry, dh says his is the same

I was going to suggest Liz Earle as well.

or Lush skin drink moisturiser, really fabulous.

KangarooKenny · 19/12/2022 08:58

If you’re treating yourself id get the Liz Earle face oil too.
It soaks in with no greasy residue, and does not give me spots.

Jojoba oil alongside your current routine.

My lovely line manager got me this sleep mask for Christmas (she told me to open it straight away!) I've used it twice already and my skin feels so good! I was the same as you, my skin feeling tight still after a hyralounic serum and my usual moisturiser but this has made such a difference. Skin feels soft, plump and hydrated.

I would use a foaming wash if you feel dry. Id use a balm Cleanser that you add water to, massage it then rinse off with a flannel. I like:

Then I Met You
Naturium Ginseed
Medik8 Oil

Moisturiser - La Roche Posay the blue tube is brilliant for every day moisturiser

Then add a couple drops of oil. Budget would be squalene by The Ordinary. More luxurious Sunday Riley do lovely ones. Depends what you want to spend.

Wouldn't use* wish there was an edit

Dr Jart also do great Moistusiers

GuyFawkesDay · 20/12/2022 08:32

I have dehydrated skin, and mine is loving the body shop CBD range. It drinks the moisturiser in, and it's really given me some glow back, without being oily and giving me spots. Result!

2 creams I can recommend for dry skin is weleda skin food- this is a bit thick but if you rub it into your fingers then apply its fine, its the best cream I have found for my dry skin esp in the winter! Even my make up artist for my wedding even commented how soft and glowy my skin was and how great my make up applied (after a few disastrous make up trials with my dry skin)

the other is embryolisse cream, very hydrating and lightweight, I tend to use this in the summer more as my skin isn’t as dry.

i wouldn’t spend too much money on cleansers as you’re washing it off, it has no major affect on the skin. Any cream cleanser should be fine, I like the superdrug vitamin E one.

also perhaps try a hyaluronic acid before applying moisturiser, its best applied to damp skin.

Covetthee · 20/12/2022 08:36

Also sorry forgot to add to above about cream cleansers- step away from any foaming fash washes. Its the worst thing for dry skin. They are catered for greasy skin and it will strip away any oils you do have in your face.

Sunnysideup999 · 20/12/2022 08:44

Neals yard face oil is lovely.
they also do a facial mister to spray on during the day to keep skin hydrated - lovely

Dogsgottabone · 20/12/2022 09:08

I use cerave moisturiser the one that has hylarauronic acid in. I use a thick layer at night and then use the daily moisturiser with the factor 30 in for day wear and I don't have dry skin.

TheOGCCL · 20/12/2022 09:35

Switch to the hydrating Cerave cleanser.

Get something you are happy/ can afford to repurchase as a moisturiser is for life not just for Christmas, I’d recommend the French brands (LRP, Avene) or Cerave.

Vilvahstore · 27/12/2022 08:52

Alternate for Cerave
Buying / gifting something without breaking your budget is appreciable.
Why don't you go with natural skincare products? When you hit 40's it is necessary to take care of the skin with harmless products. I'd strongly recommend the natural skincare Indian brand who brings you the complete care products for hair, skin, body and face.

Liz Earle cleanse and polish is the most amazing cleanser for dry and older skin. Doesn't dry it out like a foaming cleanser, but as you use water you get that clean feeling. I then.just use a cheap Nivea night cream, and my skin feels amazing.
I do get a lot of compliments on my skin (age 49). I do drink a lot if water too which I think helps. But Cleanse and Polish is fantastic and the one product I'm happy to splash out on .
