help please! I’m going out in 90 mins to a very fancy do and and hardly use any make up for work other than bare basics of foundation, mascara and lip balm. I’ve been trying to practice eye make up for the last 90mins without success.
My issue is I don’t know what eyeshadow colours suit me, I have dark brown hair highlighted with a bit of blonde balayage, blue grey eyes and and I’m wearing a navy blue satin dress. I was going to do smoky eye and red lips, but it just looks like I’ve got black eyes ☹️ I have some dark circles under my eyes and it’s making them look worse. I’ve wiped it all off and going to give up! What colours should I be using for blue grey eyes and cool colouring? I thought grey toned would be ok?

I’m 46 btw, and dark circles look bad even with concealer on.

Google how to do a Smokey eye and try and copy. I haven’t quite mastered it but I’m better than I used to be. I’m not sure about colours as I only wear neutral and gold type of colours that are hard to muck up.

Go on you tube and follow some step by step instructions. Or if you're going for a red lippy you'll probably be fine with just mascara.

FanniesFlaps · 10/12/2022 16:35

I wouldn’t do smokey eyes with red lips. Use plenty of mascara, eyeliner if you can do it and a neutral eyeshadow. Then a knockout red lipstick..

RishisProudMum · 10/12/2022 16:35

YT is your best bet. Then you can actually see what you’re working towards. Stuff like this: m.youtube.com/watch?v=EwG-qfa3tJQ

Okay don't do red lip and smoky eye at the same time. One or the other.
If red lip- use lip liner to stop it running and blot lips with tissue in between applying. Keep eyes neutral with just mascara and light brown shadow.
If smoky eyes - can't go wrong with a gold shimmery shade over the entire lid and then a richer brown shade blended in the outer corners. Take a thin shadow brush and smudge a bit of the brown shadow underneath the lower lash line. I skip eyeliner as it smudges but can use a dark brown or black blended into the top lashline. Then mascara, and natural rosy lipstick and dap of gloss.
Pop a few ghd curls in your hair and you'll look fab!!

I'd suggest black eyeliner (thin line out to corner of eye), a little bit of sparkly eye pencil over the top if you have one, lots of black mascara, then the red lipstick

TreacleTart8 · 10/12/2022 16:44

If you’re doing a red lip (which would look fabulous with a midnight blue dress), I found a great combo online which works with any covering to make your red lip the statement.

pale beige matt all over eye, upto to brows. Shimmery gold in centre of lid, blended, and then a pearly pale colour and end of eyelid blended out and into socket. Then use dark brown matt powder along upper lash line which will get into your lash line and look dramatic bit softer than eye liner, slightly winged out if you like. Mascara top lash only.

blusher, highlighter etc.

red lip, but put lip balm underneath to keep it looking plum. Hey presto!

gave a great evening

I have dark hair and grey eyes. My got to eyeshadow colour is a warm brown or copper as they make grey eyes look more blue and bright (you can use blusher over the top of a nude shadow!) I have quite dark features but find that I can't do a dark smoky look as it makes my face look a bit scrunched up. Don't just put the eyeshadow on your eye lid, extend up in to and above the hollow of your eye to make your eyes look bigger. Have a lovely evening.

Ok thanks all! How did I get to 46 and know nothing about this sort of stuff?!?
Just going to dry my hair and start again. I’ve got lots of colours, but just never use them 😬
Im excited about my dress actually as I’ve spent most of the year in gym leggings as I’ve lost a considerable amount of weight, so it feels good to get dressed up for once!

Hope you have a fab evening.

Lilliflip · 10/12/2022 17:31

Thanks all! I went for a paler base and did a line of dark shadow with a little wing (very adventurous for me). Here’s the finished make up, and I just need to sort my hair now.

Yes let's see the dress!!

DuchessofSandwich · 10/12/2022 22:34

You have great skin, especially for a 46yo. What's your secret?

Lilliflip · 11/12/2022 00:23

Hi @DuchessofSandwichthanks but no real secret, certainly nothing expensive, just Superdrug brand of make up. I’ve used Nivea soft since I was 18, and just a very minimal routine of cleansing, moisturising and sunscreen. More recently lots of water and exercise.
