Party dress / outfit help needed, I've messed up!

Christmas party in a week, thought I had an outfit sorted...but I ordered too large a size accidentally and now the dress is out of stock in my size! I'm 46, 5'9" and an 8-10 uk dress size. Party isn't formal, so can wear anything really but I wanted to look nice but understated. I'm not a fan of sequins or sparkly fabrics, so a lot of the Christmas party wear is out for me. Original dress was a long silk slip ( adjustable straps so would have worn it a bit higher than the model does here ) which I liked because it looked glamorous but was comfortable to wear, plus I could have put a jumper over it if chilly! Tbh I very rarely go out or dress up now so haven't got much of a clue, my day to day clothes are good quality but quite masculine. Any ideas? HELP!

If it’s too big go to an alterations place and get it taken in?

Gruelle · 09/12/2022 18:55

Yes, what @PeachMelba78 said! But if they’re all booked up there’s hardly a clothes shop in the country that isn’t selling a slip dress. Zara, Raey @ Matches, probably even The Row …

I thought it was really hard to alter bias cut dresses though? I have looked all over the place for other slip dresses as well, but I couldn't find anything I liked - I don't want a plain colour slip or something very low cut without adjustable straps.

All saints and Zara have loads of printed slip dresses.

It would be easy to alter the straps if you got one with fixed straps.

Reformation have some lovely ones too but more $

@Wolfieisagoodboy I’m no expert but I have 2 alterations places that I use, one for simple and one for more tricky (and Lionel Richie has apparently used them) where it’s more expensive but they can literally do anything. Depends how much you like the dress.

MorrisZapp · 09/12/2022 20:55

Defo use Lionel Richie's tailor, those straps'll stay up all night long.

MsDastardley · 09/12/2022 20:56

i would try an alterations place, they should be able to tell you straight away if the can do it. I don’t think that would hard to alter. It’s a lovely dress.

@MorrisZapp I ❤️ that they display his picture - if it’s good enough for him it’s good enough for me!

🤣🤣

Wolfieisagoodboy · 09/12/2022 21:54

@MorrisZapp even if I'm Dancing on the Ceiling??

@Tigofigo it is a reformation dress, never bought from them before hence messing up the sizing @PeachMelba78 ok alterations it is, I shall hunt for a good place - I just had a bad experience a few years ago with a dress that ended up too mini so that put me off!
