Any sensory issues?
any sense of personal style?

my teen with sensory issues is fond of the “academia aesthetic” so I use that as a guide for helping her shop.

Something sequin / sparkle on the top, with dark trousers, black jeans for example. Loads of options for sequins everywhere (at all price points) and that's probably what I'd opt for.

Christmas jumper is usually an acceptable option these days, I'm expecting a charity shop Xmas do won't be too fancy

Where do you/she normally buy her clothes?

Christmas jumper not a bad idea actually. Something like this with her best jeans?
