What do I wear to a black tie event ?

have never been to one, DH work is organising his tuxedo for him.

what do I wear ? are there rules on colour etc ????

Usually a long evening dress - although cocktail length also acceptable. Some women will wear evening tops with trousers - some will wear skirt and top - but always eveningey !!!

Think strappy dresses, strapless dresses, high heels, sparkly jewellery, glamour, glitz and sequins - no rules on colour. Really women can get away with most things - much more so than the men who have to be in uniform as it were !

Oh yes - it is a prerequisite to have hair and nails done !!! De rigeur !!
