BIG 10yo (male), smart casual’, but quirky?

MrsRoyKent · 12/11/2022 08:21

My 10yo is extremely tall and broad shouldered boy. He wears age 15-16 shirts for school. Dark jeans are sorted and he has Chelsea boots. So far, so good. However when it comes to upper body, I’m struggling.

I’ve searched the main retailers, but because of his size he ends up with plain blue or white shirts or polo shirts, and he really wants a ‘fun’ shirt like his cousins wear. Anyone know of any retailers that do anything in bigger sizes that have a bit of personality? I don’t really want a ‘Christmas’ top as though it is for a number of parties/meals over the festive period, I’d like it to last all year!

I’ve looked at Next, M&S, JL, Boden, supermarkets, Fatface, Joules… Any ideas?

How tall is he? If he's wearing 15-16 in school shirts, then xxs or xs mens shirts would be OK - have a look at ASOS as they have loads of interesting shirts

MrsRoyKent · 12/11/2022 08:30

He’s pretty tall - about 5’ 2” but still grows like a weed. ASOS is a good shout. He wears men’s clothing size S/M dependent on fit, so will go have a look!

I think maybe I am the problem. I have always chosen clothes that are quite preppy for him and that doesn’t seem to be the current fashion.

As ridiculous as it sounds, look in the men’s section. I noticed this when looking for dinosaur t-shirts for my tall 10yr old DD.

For some reason boys 12(ish) and under get character/fun shirts, then after that it is plain and boring all the way. Go to the men’s and there’s cartoons, marvel, loads of stuff (although not dinosaurs unfortunately).

I also have a tall 13 yr old DD who loves Marvel, no chance of finding those in the women’s section but small men’s clothes fit fine.

SlipperyLizard · 12/11/2022 08:47

H&M and Primark are where I’d look, maybe supermarkets too?

onepieceoflollipop · 12/11/2022 08:53

Next go up to age 16 online but only 12 in the shops just in case you didn’t realise. Plus they have hundreds more options on line than in the shops.

onepieceoflollipop · 12/11/2022 08:55

ASOS have a Topman range which might be suitable

Tigofigo · 12/11/2022 08:56

You don't really specify what you call a fun shirt, but yes ASOS and H&M and maybe Mango or Zara.

And do you mean t shirt or actual shirt?

MrsRoyKent · 12/11/2022 09:39

Thank you! Either a shirt or a polo shirt would be ideal.

  • Sadly have scoured Next online - it’s our usual go-to for him, particular with jeans/shorts as they fit well up to his size
  • H&M and Primark we’ve traditionally struggled with as the fits seem quite narrow and his shoulders are too broad.
  • ASOS had lots of lovely shirts, but most of the ‘quirky’ ones seem to be like Hawaiian style, so will be keeping them in mind for summer holidays! They have lots that are just a bit too grown up for him - he’s quite a young 10, not at all trendy or streetwise!
  • Will look at Mango & Zara! Hadn’t thought of those!

We tend to get his tee shirts in bulk from TeePublic so he can pick the design he wants and have it printed on whatever colour/size we choose - they come from the US, so postage is a pain, but content creators get a cut of the profits and they are brilliant at returns and replacements, if anyone wanders onto here and finds that useful!

Hype? The teen range is quite colourful and fun

liveforsummer · 12/11/2022 09:41

Obviously t shirts rather than shirts though

FayCarew · 12/11/2022 09:44

uniqlo?

Skelligsfeathers · 12/11/2022 09:46

Can you show us an example of what you consider to be a 'fun shirt' so we can look?

thismeansnothing · 12/11/2022 09:54

I'm not quite sure what you mean by a fun shirt. Whether you mean t-shirt or a collared shirt. But scandi brands to me are always fun.

Have a look at Maxomorra, Duns, villervalla, paapii, alba

MustBeThursday · 12/11/2022 10:05

Popsy Clothing have a few unisex t-shirts in quirky prints - www.popsyclothing.co.uk/collections/tops-and-tshirts?_=pf&sort=created-descending&display=grid

MrsRoyKent · 12/11/2022 10:06

Ooo, will look at the Scandi brands. I should have sent a link earlier. This is the sort of thing I’m hoping for: www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/embroidered-shirt-chambray-space-embroidery/sty-b2013-chk

His favourite is a small blue gingham with little T-rexes printed on, but it’s too small now. Although this is a long-sleeve shirt, a short sleeve or polo would also be fine!

Those clothes are lush and will definitely be looking for gifts for friends babies, but sadly my hulking child has grown out of them… 😣

Have never used them but this site has some print shirts in XS/S mens.

RomainingCalm · 12/11/2022 11:41

These are £££ but loads of designs. Apparently where Ainsley Harriott gets his shirts.

These are fabulous! Horribly expensive, but can look on the second hand market! Best so far!

Unfortunately no XS but the small is 38" so it might fit.
