Butane in dry shampoo etc…recalls

I don’t use dry shampoo *that much really…. but occasionally, & my teen daughter uses it a couple of times a week.
lve seen in the news that there have been lots of recalls in the US with popular dry shampoos.
Thinking of getting rid of them & weaning my daughter off too… anyone else wondering about this? 🙂

Yes, I also think it's best not to use it but my hair is very oily and frizzy and I just can't find the time to wash it and style it daily. Really not sure what to do here..

NatalieIsFreezing · 09/11/2022 11:17

What specifically are the recalls for? Have you got a link?

Purpleavocado · 09/11/2022 11:22

yes, it's really put me off them. I have a bit to finish up, so I will probably use them sparingly, and then I won't be buying more

PeloFondo · 09/11/2022 11:25

You can get puffer type ones with no butane

Ballsaque · 09/11/2022 11:28

@PeloFondo can you recommend one?

I do use Batiste, and also that powder stuff from Lush which is good but different.

It’s not butane, it’s benzine. It’s a very carcinogenic chemical. It was used a lot in the printing industry for cleaning printing presses.

My dad and his brother both worked in the printing industry all their lives - both non-smokers, both led healthy lives, and my dad was a very fit marathon runner until he was 60. They both died of leukaemia- my dad at 64 and my uncle at 70. I will never touch anything with benzine in.

@PauliesWalnuts you’re right. I’d also been googling something else / and l think some of them have both.
SO sorry about your Dad & Uncle.

Oh no :( I use Batiste on my 2nd day. Seriously, you can't trust anyone 😡

So, lab analysis found there was more benzene than legally allowed. It would be good if any ingredient that produces this was named - for example, looking at my Batiste bottle, it contains benzyl benzoate which sounds bezene-adjacent to me. (Can you tell I don't have a Chemistry background?!) Or is it a by-product of the whole thing that's irrelevant to this ingredient?

I also use 'Love Beauty And Planet' Day 2 dry shampoo because Sali Hughes recommended it once - it's cheapish and doesn't have anything benzy on the label.

I imagine the risk is minuscule but would prefer to avoid it.

In my previous link there is a link to the actual lab report - near the bottom there is a table showing all the brands and products they tested and levels of Benzene. Batiste has several high ones but also ones below the levels. 'Love Beauty And Planet' isn't on there; I suspect it's a UK brand.
