what do you wear to a christening?

My nephew is having his christening in April, but being Jewish, I don't really know what to wear. I was told "the same as what you wear to weddings", but most of the weddings I've been to I was a bridesmaid, and given a choice I would much rather not wear an ill-fitting dress in a hideous colour chosen by someone else.

Suggestions?

I went to a lovely Christening last year and the vast majority of women opted for mid-length dresses or longer skirts. High heeels or knee length boots were all the rage. There was a party afterwards, so most people steered away from hats (in order to avoid 'hat hair'), but a couple wore - how I love this word - fascinators in their hair.

Have a fab time!

Thanks Patsy.

So, are you meant to wear hats? Would I really offend my sister-in-laws family if I turned up sans hat? Hm. It looks like I will have to go shopping

Smart-ish. Nice dress / top-and-skirt combo/trouser suit. Just don't reveal too much flesh and you'll be fine. Think the daytime, religious bit of a Batmitzvah.

Hat not necessary!

Cool. Thank you!

Smart-ish, hat not necessary, IME. Unless they are royalty or similar...
