What to wear for a zoom interview

Probably overthinking it, but my background is white so I don't want to wear a traditional white shirt.

I was thinking maybe a black, navy or ivory shirt. Bonus if it has some embroidery or a ribbon bow for interest. Not too formal looking, something more casual that I can wear again with jeans.

Has anyone come across anything like this? I just don't know where to look. Budget of around £50.

Also, how would you recommend hair and makeup to look? I have long dark hair but generally wear it up. I tend to wear makeup most days, quite natural looking but with my trusty black liner.

www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/ruffle-linen-popover-blouse-alder-green/sty-t0915-grn What about this?

and your natural make up look & whatever way you do your hair normally sounds fine, you want to feel like yourself after all, good luck!

I think I would go for a colour, block rather than patterned.

You could always order the Chloe blouse, keep the tags on, wear for interview and keep it if you get the job 😀(they are pricey but worth it in my view as do last well).

A photographer once told me to go for plain jewel colours for good portrait photos so Uni shine the same would work for a video call. So bold colours like sapphire blue, emerald green, ruby red

Thanks @sopeas I worry I will be a crinkled mess with it being linen but it is a good dupe!

@Aftertheharvest haha love your thinking, I have to admit I did do that once with another zoom interview, it was an Oliver Bonas shirt, wish I'd kept it now as it would come in handy!

@Fandangoes interesting thought, never thought to wear bold colours for an interview, always thought it should be neutral colours so not to distract. It's for a job in the NHS if that makes a difference.

When I did an interview course recently , they discussed zoom / teams interviews . The advice was to go for something smart with colour as it is far more difficult to project any personality with a remote interview.

Motorina · 28/10/2022 21:46

For an NHS job I would go for something comfortable and you feel confident in. NHS interviews are tightly scored so, unless you're flashing major cleavage, have curry stains all over it, or a tshirt with an obscene message, it's not going to make any difference.

I'm not saying don't use it as an opportunity to buy somethign smart. I'm saying that if you wanted to wear something from your current wardrobe then odds are it's not going to make any difference.

Not black or white as it looks terrible on a video call - camera won't be able to get the light balance right so your skin will look unnatural.

Also not stripes or repeating patterns for similar reason - it goes weird on camera and will give your interviewers motion sickness.

Colour needs to contrast with your background too otherwise you'll end up with a camouflage effect where you look like a floating head.

There's loads of stuff about this online if you Google, but this one is a decent summary of the kinds of things you need to consider in how you present yourself for a video call (eg audio and background as well) vimeo.com/blog/post/how-to-look-good-on-zoom/

Littleguggi · 28/10/2022 21:54

Okay some really helpful advice, I'm taking notes. I really don't want to end up a floating head so will stick to my original plan of wearing navy/ ivory/ maybe grey- don't feel confident with a bold colour!

I probably should be spending this time doing actual interview prep but online shopping is so much more fun haha
