Photo of unwashed messy hair. Can’t go to the salon so need to do at home. Have only ever used the garnier gradual highlight thing. Which box colours do you rate and what kind of colour would I want to try and get something like this? Understand would need maintaining with purple shampoo etc

Your hair is very dark. I would go to a salon as you’ll need strong bleach, then a toner. If you do this yourself you’ll risk your hair breaking off.

You won't be able to do that at home, you'll be orange

I use the Nice and Easy box dyes. They tell you on the back what colour you might expect from your current colour, maybe a light ash blonde would do it.

another vote for nice and easy...ultra ash blonde

I'm not a hairdresser but you look like you are a level 7, and you want to go to a level 10. Most box dyes will only do two shades of lift and you want 3.

You would need to use hi lift bleach with 20vol peroxide, maybe doing it twice (it will stop processing after half an hour or so) and then it will be orange so you would need a pearl or icy colour to add the platinum tone. Too much ash will just make it go darker again and greenish.
You would need to use regular toner as well as purple shampoo.

I really don't recommend you try this at home though, hi lift bleach is not kind to your hair! Use Olaplex or pureplex a few days before and a few days after..

Thanks all. I’m realistic I can’t achieve this without a hairdresser, but would like to feel a bit better so think will just go for a box set and see how light that goes, no way would I play with additional bleach at home!

I've used this and gone pretty blonde. I'd say from about your colour but not quite as ash as the second photo (I have warm tones so wasn't expecting or aiming for that). I just used it all over but could also be used for highlights.

Bleach/developer and a toner applied correctly- loads of videos on YouTube will be kinder to your hair than a box dye

You can chose the level of developer, I'd prob not go above 20%

In box dyes the developer is often 40% and that is what does the damage. Plus the colour is never what you want.

If you can apply the bleach confidentiality without missing any spots you can tone it to a decent colour. Though to go as white as the inspo pic you'd need your bleached hair to be the colour of the inside of a banana before toning.

Also PLEASE DONT throw box colour over box colour if you've made a mistake. So hard to fix. If it's really bad use a 6 wash colour with NO developer

Best to buy supplies from Sally's or amazon that are actual hairdressing supplies and tell you what is in the box, not just guff about covering greys (= a v v high strength developer no one needs causing damage)

GOOD LUCK, it's only hair, it'll grow back

That’s interesting @MrsDeWinter i naively thought box dyes would be the safer/milder option!
