If you have Invisaligns, how many times have your wires broken?

Kai1981 · 25/10/2022 14:06

My wires have broken 3 times in 18 months.

They said it could be due to my bite (but were very vague about it).

The wire is now cutting into my gum. It is £50 a pop to get them fixed! Or £250 to get them redone.

Seriously considering removing them but I know that comes with other issues.

Is this a common issue?

Do I wear nighttime retainers? I paid £250 for 3 sets of nighttime retainers and don’t have any wire! Was an either or option for me. My husband has wires have they snapped 2 times in 5 yesterday but he doesn’t wear retainers at night! Both our teeth havnt moved

ZooTropia · 25/10/2022 14:20

If you dont wear your retainers your teeth will move. Period

ooohlittlesebastian · 25/10/2022 14:28

None. Finished my treatment around 4 years ago. I do wear retainers at night too, and have had to go back a couple of times because some of the composite has come off exposing the wire. But it's never actually snapped.

Toomuchtoolong · 25/10/2022 15:06

@ZooTropia do you mean if you don’t wear retainers and have a wire they’ll still move? Our orthodontist gives an either wire or retainers option - not both. 5years on my husbands still look the same and he has top and bottom wire only no night time retainers.
I wear a retainer every night anyway regardless for grinding so I went for the vivera retainers and no wire. I’m more caution of mine moving that my husbands to be honest , I wear the retainer for 6-8 hrs a night.

I have the wire and the retainers. My bottom wire has snapped once in the 3 years.

I lost my retainers and had to wait for replacements so I was grateful for the wire in the interim. That said, it’s also a pain for plaque build up. I make sure I see the hygienist regularly!

Purpleavocado · 25/10/2022 15:58

I was thinking of getting wire on my bottom teeth when they're finished, maybe I should just go with the night time retainers if they break a lot. I think they want £400 for 3 sets of the vivera retainers.

VeganGordie · 25/10/2022 16:08

both mine and my friends have snapped 3 times each due to not wearing retainers

Iknowthis1 · 25/10/2022 17:07

My orthodontist only does a wire on the top or the bottom. He said he finds that they don't stay on as well if you have both. If the wire comes off once he redoes it for free. If it comes off a second time he recommends not putting it back because it will keep coming off.

I have a wire on the bottom teeth only and have had no problem with it.

Wires should suffice. But I wore retainers for about 8 months after. I still have wires and they don't move now. Mine have never broken in 2 years

Kai1981 · 25/10/2022 17:49

Thanks all. I have wires on both and they've snapped in different places top and bottom each time.

I was given a nighttime retainer to wear once a week.

Now I think the wires aren't great and I should wear the nighttime retainer more often. Maybe I'll give it one more time.

But it does sound like every 6 months is poor!

I had the wire and no retainers after train tracks & they moved v badly.
Recently finished invisalign - and now have a new wire, and a retainer at night time. I am not risking it. My dentist was v clear if I skip the retainer at night I could go out of alignment again.

MarcelEtCeleste · 25/10/2022 17:58

I’ve had too and bottom wires for 9 years and the top one has broken twice.

Once around 6 months in and it’s just gone again now. It’s not bothering me and it’s just the end tooth untethered, so my dentist said to leave it until more breaks off or that tooth shows signs of moving. He’d have fixed it if it were anywhere else but that tooth seems really stable.

MarcelEtCeleste · 25/10/2022 18:01

@BlackSwan I understand your desire for a belt and braces approach (boom boom) after your first experience, but how could they move if you don’t wear the retainer when they’re wired in position?

I wonder whether it’s night-time grinding that usually breaks them and the retainer prevents that?

Unseelie · 25/10/2022 18:21

When I had my wire put on I was very worried about it snapping or coming off. The orthodontist said they should only come off if they weren’t correctly fitted, and usually it comes off very quickly or not at all.

Mine’s been on 5 years now, no problems, my orthodontist did a fab job on the wire I think.

Unseelie · 25/10/2022 18:22

Ps you don’t have to return to your current dentist. You can get any ortho to do a wire and some of them are much better than others. I’d try a different orthodontist OP.

CarPoor · 25/10/2022 18:30

Do you mean a wire retainer? Or like a braces wire?

If just the retainer switch to night time retainers, you will have to wear them everyday though

Kai1981 · 25/10/2022 21:28

Thanks all.

The wires are fixed on my teeth yes.

I'm wondering if I grind my teeth (I used to before Invislign). If so I should probably take out the wires and just wear aligner every night I think.

Or get them done somewhere else first and then see.

He absolutely shouldn't be charging you if they're breaking every 6 months! The best way to stop your teeth moving is a wire and a retainer. Some people are lucky and they won't do either and their teeth worn move. Some people (me) have very moveable teeth and will shift at any given moment. If you're wearing your removable retainers regularly- every other night will be fine then you don't technically need the wire.

Ladyparker00 · 25/10/2022 21:42

I've got wire at the back on both front 6 upper and lower teeth and I wear a retainer alternate nights after finishing 2 and a half years of orthodontic treatment (train tracks) in my 40's ( this being after the orthodontic treatment i had as a teenager - which did not include any retainers - resulted in my teeth moving significantly during adulthood). Two years on and I've had absolutely no problems so far with wire or retainer. My orthodontist did a very good job on the wires - I think that is the key. But he was very clear that I needed to have both and continue with the retainer for the rest of my life!!

Kai1981 · 25/10/2022 22:45

Ahhh... so I was told to wear the removable retainer once a week! No wonder my wires are moving.

I think I probably should just get them redone then wear the nighttime ones more regularly.
