What is everyone wearing for the festive season?

I’ve got a couple of parties where I don’t want to look done up to the nines (given everyone is so casual these days) but want to make some kind of effort.

I don’t wear dresses so I’m looking for separates, really a top or jacket with sequins or shimmer or some other feature that sets it apart from day/office wear. Or some good shoes.

I’m thinking along the lines of this but this is £180 for polyester which is a lot for a couple of parties. On the other hand I’m trying to buy better and some of the stuff in the cheaper shops really is cheap.

Just looking for inspiration before anything half good sells out!

A sparkly but subtle sequinned top, smart black jeans and boots.

Thankfully both my events are with different groups so I can wear the same thing. I got the sparkly top from Vinted last week for £2. Originally from coast.

@Chickenpeppers Thank you. I had seen that Asda one but it’s sold out in my size. I’m not a fan of showing my shoulders (very top heavy) but would have considered it with some kind of cover up.

M&S have a green sequin blazer. Green seems to be the colour of the season.

I've no objection to spending that sort of money if it's worth it. Maybe that blouse looks stunning in real life but on a website it doesn't remotely look as if it cost that much.

I saw a gold sequin blazer in marks the other day, it was really nice. I was thinking about that for Xmas do with cream top, cream pants and gold belt.

Fireballxl5 · 22/10/2022 11:35

I love that too OP but a word of warning I had a similar shiny green top and got a grease mark on it which shows however I wash it.
At that price it would be a risk I wouldn’t want to take.. I’m very careful too with my clothes.

I feel really conflicted about this. The last few years I have had no “nights out” and have worn a fab sparkly midi skirt with a chunky knit jumper to house things. This year I do have a fancy meal, and that outfit won’t cut it - partly because the skirt would be hidden sitting down, and partly because a lot of the sequins have fallen off (it was an eBay buy in the first place). But I am really, really loathed to spend out on something that gets little wear.

I think I am going to try and do with a nice black short dress from Oliver Bonas that I have, and get some real showstopper earrings maybe. The dress has a high neck so necklaces don’t really work.

That’s no help, OP, I am just musing on my own situation. I am not a dress up fancy person - more Cos/Arket style day to day so I am finding it a bit tricky!

I have a blue velvet tulip shaped dress that is gorgeous - I roll it out every Xmas - never find anything else I like better.
I also have a satin cinnamon asymmetric midi skirt that's lovely with a jumper and knee high boots.
Leather leggings, a silk cami and a blazer.
I just got a slinky jumper dress which has a slit up one side and deep v neck front and back in chocolate brown - will work with midi shoe boots.

BHRK · 22/10/2022 13:22

Have you looked in Jigsaw for similar tops but cheaper? Then tend to do that shape. I was eyeing up M&S slightly sparkly jeans the other day, which I’d wear with suede boots and a top

Floisme · 22/10/2022 14:02

I'd need to see the LK Bennett top in real life but I really like it and, although the price is Shock it looks a lot more versatile to me than a sequinned blazer so, if you can afford it, I think the cost per wear might turn out lower. (Yes, I know I can dress down a sequin top / blazer with jeans and wear it all year round but I never actually do.) The dry clean only tag is very off-putting though - I'd probably ignore it and hand wash very carefully but then there's no comeback if anything goes wrong.

As for me, I'm a bit like Judy - wanting to push the boat out cos it's been so long but also determined not to buy something new that might only get a couple of wears. But then I have a lot of clothes so I've no excuse. I'm pretty sure glitter, velvet and silk will figure heavily, and quite possibly all three.

GettingStuffed · 22/10/2022 14:18

I don't buy anything new but I have a number of Christmas t-shirts, and a lovely oversized flamingo sweatshirt, some Christmas print dresses I used wear the dresses when I meet up with friends. I also have a velvet t-shirt dress and a blue, somewhere between royal blue and navy, and a velvet tunic which is best described as a stormy night design.

I'm OK for most scenarios

Blue item is a skirt, error caused by DGS trying to steal my snack

TheOGCCL · 22/10/2022 14:34

@BHRK Yes! I have just ordered these two to try as it happens

Saw this and thought of you OP. You could get the matching skirt too and wear together or as separates watsonandwhite.com/products/paloma-blouse?utm_content=Facebook_UA&utm_source=facebook&variant=43552027574492

I managed to stalk a long sleeved House of Sunny dress (they have nice cut out detailing on the back) in the summer sales (got it for £30!) but I need some footwear to go with it. It looks more luxurious and fluffy in person.

Love the good Jigsaw one. Also, M&S are doing a £25 sequinned mini skirt which is getting good reviews. Could wear with black tights

PreColumbian · 22/10/2022 22:16

I’m loving the co-ord sets around at the moment.

mrssmiling · 23/10/2022 10:24

Hush, The White Company and Mint Velvet are all worth a look for sparkle and sequins. Lots of lovely jewelled pumps this winter - looking at Boden and the White Company’s.

TheOGCCL · 23/10/2022 10:48

@BHRK I saw that mini and would be different but I just don’t wear skirts. Too short legs and too big a bust to look in any way elegant.

I love the look of lamé but have always found it incredibly itchy to wear as a note of caution!

MistySkiesAreGone · 23/10/2022 19:34

Asda has a navy velour jumpsuit.
