Tanktop to wear over shirt

Hearing that tank tops were in this season, reminded me of the tank top love I had as a teen back in the 80's and I'm keen to find one. I'm short (short legs too), and have a couple of shirts which I rarely wear as they don't really suit me. I think they might with a shortish (not cropped but sitting around the bellybutton), fitted knitted tank top over them in muted colours / possibly patterned. I can't find one anywhere - the closest I got was this from sea salt, but it's a bit long and not that fitted. Has anyone seen anything that might fit the bill? I thought the Edinburgh Woollen Mill might come up trumps but nothing!!

Everywhere has them - M and S have loads in all price ranges, H and M etc.

JeanGabin · 20/10/2022 09:28

Bare - that is gorgeous, just the kind of thing I'm looking for (though would prefer a bit shorter). Not sure I can justify £169 though..
NormaTheWife, I've looked in the usual shops - M&S, jigsaw, Uniqlo, hobbs, mint velvet etc - they're all looser fit and longer (sitting on hips rather than at waistline) which really doesn't work for me - makes me look even more of a shortarse!
I see a couple of possibles on H&M though - maybe worth trying out, thank you!

@JeanGabin can you knit? Anyone you know knit? That's the best way imo

Gherkingreen · 20/10/2022 10:43

After watching Sandra Oh in the series where she's a college lecturer I've been channelling wide leg trousers, shirts and really, really want a fairisle tank top. 70s Ally McGraw vibe. Love.

JeanGabin · 20/10/2022 10:47

Sooverthemill, I did think that. But the last time I knitted anything was at primary school!

Gherkin - that is exactly the look I'm wanting!!!

I got a really funky argylle style one that's just that length in Primark last week

Sooverthemill · 20/10/2022 11:27

Maybe you should take it up again? I do knit quite a lot and have seen a pattern recently that I think is exactly what you are looking for. Knitting isn't difficult, you just have to have time really

jeaux90 · 20/10/2022 11:46

Mens department,M&S extra small. Quite a good choice of colours.

buttons123456 · 20/10/2022 15:31

I work in next and we have quite a few .

woodhill · 20/10/2022 15:40

I've bought the same one from Seasalt which I love

I also crocheted one that comes up a bit shorter and quite fitted

Knitting would also be an option

Ladyoftheprom · 20/10/2022 15:43

I've just bought one from cefinn 😍

cannaethink · 20/10/2022 15:48

www.zalando.co.uk/vero-moda-petite-vmolina-o-neck-vest-jumper-flint-stone-vm021i05j-k11.html

I bought this last year but there’s still some sizes and colour in stock. I’m 5’8 and the petite sits at the waist band of my (quite high waisted) jeans.

AlwaysTheBabysitter · 20/10/2022 15:53

There are quite a lot on Vinted if you search 'patterned sweater vest'.

strangelyenough · 20/10/2022 16:06

Try hollister, my dd got a few last year from there

Djangor3725 · 20/10/2022 16:35

Quite a few on vinted but look under knitwear Waistcoats - that section has tank tops or vests and also the ones with buttons down the front & vnecks which I prefer.

JeanGabin · 20/10/2022 21:56

Thankyou all so much - now I have tons of options. I saw a lovely one on Brora but £315 <gulp>
I think I've been searching for the wrong thing - they're knitted vests or waistcoats, not tank tops Grin
softpebbles, I've ordered the M&S fair isle one - fingers crossed it works, sized down so it's fitted
I'll take a trip to primark / next if it doesn't (though the cefinn one looks beautiful - definitely a shop to look at when I'm wanting an investment piece!)
I'd love to knit one, but honestly, I know it'd end up half done and would make me feel bad every time I saw it. Seriously impressed at knitters and crocheters though.
Thanks again Wine

Toast has a lovely one , it’s short in length and might be exactly what you are after . I’m afraid it is expensive but not as much as Brora .

Verite1 · 20/10/2022 22:55

Me and Em have some but not sure how pricey

JeanGabin · 21/10/2022 14:46

I picked it up today @softpebbles and the per Una one is actually just right - I wasn't sure about the colours online but very happy with them. Thanks for all the tips
