Can I wear socks with loafers?

Hello sartorially gifted people!

I have a pair of caramel (ish) coloured loafers from mint velvet, but also cold feet.

Can I wear socks with loafers? What colour? I generally only have v dark navy socks. Would these be ok? They are bamboo so smooth and sleek looking but they are darker than the loafer.

I mean you can, but there's a risk they'll look like driving shoes bringing with it the assumption you own a beige Rover and have one of those beaded seat covers.

Well it depends if you're a Baroque or Renaissance loafer daaahling.. simply put, a boldly dark sock highlighting the soft cream colour of the shoe is a confidently vulgar rococo statement that can only work if paired with a flamboyant boldly coloured red/orange dress and/or confusing accessory like a reclaimed broken chandelier made into a necklace. Renaissance requires silky skin coloured stockings or tights with 'no show socks' hugging the feet inside the loafers and hiding the cold truth. Depends on who you want to impress and how much of a life you have.
