Hair colouring - what is toner and is it needed?

When I get my hair coloured they always ask if I want a toner- is this a necessary part of the process or not really needed? They charge extra for it. They also offer other treatments like a "colour Lock" - are these worth having /do they make any difference? I'm looking like everyone else to cut back on things that are not needed.

Are you going blonde? I think its definitely needed on blonde to get rid of orangey ness.
I used to have brown to cover grey and never got asked about toner.
I'm not the best person to ask but thought I'd chip in and hopefully bump your thread a bit.

Would have thought toner should be included in the price though.

Toner adds gloss and tone to bleached hair, def worth having you can get different shades, I like a rose gold. Lasts few weeks.

I was there today and the toner is 12.50 extra. They told me it sets the kind of blond you get - ashy or golden etc. Seems a bit weird to me as it sounds like something needed to complete it all.
