Hoop earrings...

A friend once declared that she couldn't wear hoop earring because they made her look common...this,probably rather follishly, has coloured my view on them for myself - I have some pretty silver hoops with little turquoise beads twined on them which weren't cheap and from a really lovely shop - but everytime I put them on I wonder about them...what do others think, or is this a foolish thing and I should just wear the earrings ?!

I think small, tasteful hoops are ok, but I always cringe a bit when I see HUGE hoops in someone's ears.

dd1 insists on wearing them and she knows it bothers me. Partly because of the look of them, but also because I can't stop thinking about the millions of ways that she could catch them in something (they're so big) and rip her ears to shreds.

Anyway, I digress... small ones, ok, big ones not.

tasjaSAmuminUK · 25/01/2008 09:46

Wear the earrings! I only recently discovered hoop earrings myself. Never actually fancied them, always thought they were to big for my type of face. But now I love my hoop earrings.

must add, if they are a fair size they look nice, but these BIG hoop earrings - COMMON

fryalot · 25/01/2008 09:46

I just found these ones, which apparently are 5.5cm from top to bottom. Now that's big!

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/01/2008 09:47

mine are lovely but I still think mmmm... am a bit funny about jewellery anyway and hate having too much on at once however, I don't really feel up to wearing discreet pearls just yet !

this big or something

GreatAuntieWurly · 25/01/2008 09:50

no they are still firmly intact, but I do laugh when I look at them in the shops remembering all the times that I thought i was cool but really got my jumper caught on them, or nearly forgot to take them out before going to bed or even wearing them as bangles as they were so big.

harleyd · 25/01/2008 09:52

i like em

flowerybeanbag · 25/01/2008 09:53

5.5 cm is not that big

from here

to here

I reckon

LoveAngel · 25/01/2008 09:53

I have a reverse hoop snobbery, actually. I think big hoops (as long as they're slim and aren't those chunky gold H Samuel-style ones) are elegant (as long as not worn with trackie bottoms). I think small hoops say: preparing for a 'nice, tasteful' (barf emoticon) middle age.

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/01/2008 09:53

quonk - oh,I didn't realise they were that big ! that's scary !

GreatAuntieWurly · 25/01/2008 09:56

MAS as long as you like the earrings stuff what everyone else says.

fryalot · 25/01/2008 09:56

oh yeah, flowery - yours was closer to 5.5cm

but mine was nearly 5.5 inches

I take it back. The ones I linked to are ok

But the ones that are 5.5 inches are too big imo

fryalot · 25/01/2008 09:57

harley - everyone knows that!

6 inches is about from

here: [-to---] here

isn't it?

harleyd · 25/01/2008 09:58

lol

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/01/2008 09:58

it's what I think though, if I think they make me look common then I'm stuck ! I'd think they look lovely on someone else !
