No idea what to wear anymore

I just want to sell all my clothes on vinted and start again. I hate my whole wardrobe and don't know what suits me. I spend most of my time in gym leggings!
Went to river island yesterday and all the clothes look cold, hard to wash and uncomfortable.

I'm mid thirties, almost 6ft tall, slim but shorter husband so won't wear anything heeled as I feel self conscious. No DC yet. What would suit me???

It sounds like you’re ideally built to wear anything. What do you like? If you had to pick a celeb as a style icon, who would it be?

grey12 · 19/09/2022 16:18

Pick someone who has similar colours to you (similar hair colour, eye colour, skin colour) because that can make a huge difference. I find camel coats absolutely gorgeous but the colour makes me look half dead 🤷🏻‍♀️

Animallover87 · 19/09/2022 16:21

@Cherchezlaspice in theory yes, one of my colleagues said to me a few weeks ago that clothes shopping must be so easy for me.

But it's not as I have no idea what to buy 🙈 I couldn't even tell you a celeb I think looks good as I don't really follow them.

Have a Google and see? Maybe go with ‘best dressed female celebrities’ and see who you like.

TwilightSkies · 19/09/2022 16:27

I find good ideas on Pinterest

themimi · 19/09/2022 16:31

I can relate. I'm in my late 30s (as late as you can get!). I don't want to look frumpy but find it hard to get it right. Wish there was a 'go to' shop!

Can you still book a dresser to bring outfits to try in John Lewis - I don't think there's a charge

Mojitomogul · 19/09/2022 16:36

Try online - Freeman's, Silk Fred, Tiger lily boutique, all have good selection.

thedevilinablackdress · 19/09/2022 16:39

Do you ever see people in the street you think look good? What are they wearing? Would it suit your lifestyle?

Mojitomogul · 19/09/2022 16:40

Coming into autumn, you literally can't go wrong with a pair of skinny jeans, a good quality white shirt, and some brown knee high boots, with a checked 'shacket' over the top or a cosy faux sheepskin coatigan. A denim dress, long sleeved with buttons and tights looks good with boots too. Some funky patterned trousers with white trainers and a slouchy t-shirt works well for weekends. Maxi shirt style dresses are really flattering with flat boots or trainers. Don't go for trends, go for classic and things you feel comfortable in.

Maybe check minimalist closets to have an idea of what basics are good to have

Animallover87 · 19/09/2022 16:46

I think I maybe do need to invest in some good quality basics and make that the majority of my wardrobe.

Then if I see anything I like that's fashionable buy the odd piece.

The me of ten years ago wouldn't believe how clueless I am now 🙈

I've no idea either, but there are a few people I follow (?) on Instagram that always seem put together. I find that the older I get, the simpler my clothes need to be. So, I can't wear patterns near my face, or clothes with ruffles or frills. In the winter I just wear jeans and a v-neck jumper with nice coats. Shirt dresses suit me too. I'm only 5' 9 though and am an inverted triangle (wide shoulders and narrower hips).

What shape are you? Find your shape first, and then look at outfits best suited to your shape. Then work out what colours suit you. There are some good stylists on YouTube.
