Grrrrr can't find clothes I like.

Nipped round some shops this morning. Looks like another season of shapeless stuff in sludgy colours is ahead of us.

For those of you who this stuff suits - fill your boots. I'm thrilled for you.

Unfortunately, frilled peasanty stuff in ditsy prints makes me look like Laura Ingalls' fat nan, let alone Suzi Quatro's.

I'm 52, 5 foot 4 and an hourglass ( under a persistent layer of fat, which I'm slowly losing). Size 16 with big boobs, so high necked is a no no. I wear a lot of black, and am basically indie/goth/art teacher when it comes to style.

I find it quite hard to dress my shape - people hold up hourglass as a desirable silhouette but I find I can't wear tops that are either too cropped ( fat tummy) or too long ( make me look square) - they have to hit just at the right point on my hips to be flattering. Tunics swamp me or just hang off my shelf-like boobs.
Being short, cropped trousers are impossible without taking everything up.
Wrap type dresses aren't the worst but too much hassle for everyday , when I normally wear jeans and T-shirts.
I could dip my toe back in the water of shorter skirts with thick tights- just haven't seen any I like (#fussy.)

If any of this sounds like you, I'm desperate to know what you're wearing at the moment. I'm more high street than high end but if anyone has any great finds, please share them!

I've got large boobs and have been having some luck with mid rise jeans and trousers with an oversized shirt tucked in (either all the way or just at the front). I think we can wear high tight tops, they just need to be covered by another layer like a shirt or oversized cardigan.

Well I don't know if you'd call this indie/goth/art teacher, I guess they're more hippie, but I just bought a couple of t-shirts here. Definitely not sludgy! I'm a different size and shape from you but similar age, and recently the shops seem to have nothing I like.

Do belts help show off your waist?

UWhatNow · 13/09/2022 22:06

I’m your twin sister in terms of physique and style and I feel your pain - everything is always shit at this time of year.

I personally found this amazingly flattering and will wear (when weather colder) with black tights and DM ankle boots:

Do belts help show off your waist?

Yes to a degree but I try to avoid them as I feel a bit " here's my tits and also my arse" if I wear one.

😂😂😂😂

I know precisely what you mean!

Stickykidney · 14/09/2022 06:49

I get it. It's tricky. Ended up getting a t-shirt from blacks the other day, right length, still feels a bit tight and 'booby' tho. But I thought wth least its long enough/not too long.
I also normally do the short skirt/tights/boots thing but last year did shorts too which was easier to do tops with like shirts. Can't find any shorts this year that are suitable tho ... Some of my knickers are bigger!
Had some success in summer at John Lewis so I keep an eye on them... No other ideas tho sorry.

I've seen a company called Little Lies recommended on here for alternative/ rock chick style.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 14/09/2022 08:58

I looked at little lies recently and it's definitely the right ballpark but nothing really grabbed me.
