Why is a jacket with a hood such a rare animal?

As it’s pissed down with rain since the start of term and dd needed a new jacket, we’ve tried very hard to find one we like with a hood.

Why is a puffa type padded jacket hoodless? There’s a few, but just been in UO, H and M, North Face and Vans. So many hoidless jackets.

Whats the point in this country having a coat with no hood. Loads of lovely casual jackets, all hoodless. So we didn’t buy them.

The North Face should surely only sell them with hoods? I mean if you’re scaling the North Face it might be a bit wet?

l swear this is a new thing based on cost. We got one in the end, but the choice was crap. The majority didn’t have hoods.Confused

I find it tricky to keep the hood on. When it rains it tends to be windy and mine always blows off unless I walk along holding hood in place like a weirdo.

ISeeTrees · 09/09/2022 08:43

If I want decent pockets and hoods, I go straight to the men's section..

Desert76 · 09/09/2022 08:46

Funny, I always find the opposite!

I (and dc) like a puffy jacket that we can wear under a rain jacket when it’s both cold and wet, so prefer without a hood for the coat underneath, and can never find one.

Barbour jacket. Tons of pockets and a removable hood.

Fleetheart · 09/09/2022 08:50

fatface has lots of good jackets, many with hoods

If you're scaling the north face you won't be doing it in a puffa jacket... there are plenty of goretex jackets with wired hoods which stay on in the wind. Not 'nice jackets' though. I guess on items which put any element of fashion over function, designers may want to avoid the bunchy look of a hood (they don't look good if your hair isn't short). I'd use an umbrella or separate hat with those.

Floisme · 09/09/2022 09:09

God yes this infuriates me. I cannot stand umbrellas and it baffles me how British designers enjoy such a great reputation for creativity and yet cannot come up with a stylish coat that’s appropriate for British weather at a decent price.

My solutions were Barbour and Protected Species (who used to do a Mumsnet discount - don’t know if they still do). Not cheap though. Also Rains I believe.

Yes that’s a problem, but surely finding solutions to problems is a designer’s job?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/09/2022 09:17

Dd won’t set foot in Fatface or wear Barbour!

l won’t buy a coat unless it has a hood on it.

Nows here’s a weird thing. In the late 80’s and 90’s, l was a jacket designer. Designing those hideous colour block things that all the teens are going mad for atm.

We always put hoods on them. Because they were horrible padded jackets. But they were worn in winter. So l can only conclude it’s a cost thing. And we sold millions of them.

l don’t find hoods ‘bunchy’ or uncomfortable. I only find them useful.

Try Uniqlo & North Face online. Also Decathlon.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/09/2022 08:11

North Face online is the biggest offender of them all. Hardly any of their little puffa jackets have hoods.

Uniqlo is better, but she didn’t like anything in there.

I have a Regatta puffa jacket with a hood. It's deeply unstylish, but it gets the job done.

CoralMist · 10/09/2022 08:16

Look at ski jackets many come with a hood, got a lovely black tailored one with a hood and faux fur trim and other than a goggle pocket inside which is a great oversized pocket internally, and a ski skirt that buttons to the lining so you don’t see it when jacket is unzipped, your really couldn’t tell it’s a ski jacket. Love mine and it’s become my staple winter jacket.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/09/2022 08:29

She doesn’t want a tailored one, she wants a fashion one. Maybe this should have been about fashion jackets with no hoods.

But even fashion jackets are worn in the rain.
