Anyone used box dye on highlighted hair?

had highlights in my dark brown hair a few months ago. First time ever and I didn’t like it as they were too light and stripey, but have put up with it. Now at the point where I need to do something and don’t really want to spend out again for something I won’t like.

Do you think if I use a box dye it will go wrong and I’ll end up with green hair ? If it’s a massive no no do I just go back to a hairdresser and ask for one colour as close to my natural as possible?

I've put box dye over highlights/ bleach dozens of times.

It's chlorine in swimming pools that causes a green tinge not overlapping colours.

Too much dye can break/ damage hair but not one box dye on months old highlights.

The highlighted bits will/ should stay lighter though. Or those bits may fade more after washing.

You can DIY highlights over your box dye. Just copy what the hairdresser's do. I use kitchen tinfoil and a tailcomb.

I have never had an issue and gone from blond to brown to red in all different directions loads of times.
