How to find anything good on eBay?

I’m all for cutting down on fast fashion, and after seeing some of the outfits on love island through their partnership with eBay and Tasha from the series brand deal with them I thought I’d find some good bits.. but I’m really not!

How do I find the good stuff on there? Am I missing a trick?!

I look by brands-I love joe browns stuff,so I type ‘joe browns size x’ and it takes me to only that brand
also ‘ex m&s’ can come up trumps
you can filter out what you don’t like so I’d go for ‘ex dp dress size x’ rather than ‘dress size x’
I’ve found some lovely bits that I’d have missed out on otherwise

Look for brands. It will suggest other brands you might like. If you want to filter out all the crappy chinese clothes, filter on Conditon - Used

chillipenguin · 26/08/2022 11:43

Yes search for brands and the size. If you find a seller selling decent stuff then favourite them

As well as looking for brands, look for materials or filter by materials. I’ll look for a jumper say but filter to cashmere/the colour and size I want.

This was how I found my best ever ebay purchase - a long cashmere coat, worn twice but bought in the 1980s! It probably cost a bomb new.

And try Vinted - you can search by brand, size and condition easily on there.

I love eBay

I usually know what ‘want’ so part dress dress for a wedding etc I search ‘midi dress 10’ filter uk only and ending soonest and view the first 5 (or 100) pages haha

another one who searches brands so I just got a brand new with tags joules winter coat for £30

I sometimes set up alerts for brands I like and stuff for dd horseriding so I don’t miss out

SalesMum · 26/08/2022 12:06

Bloody hell should have proof read

i know what I WANT MIDI dress…

If you buy from ebay, check that the size of the item is photographed in the listing. I've seen things listed as size 10, but the label on the piece of clothing said size 14, and shoes are often listed in the wrong size. Clothes in other countries use different sizing. I was about to bid on something today but when I checked, the Unisex Adult item was a size S, but was the equivalent of a woman's size 6 in the UK.

Vintage clothes sizes tend to be much smaller.

Agree with others- be very specific about what you want.

I had a much loved black wool Laura Ashley riding coat from the late 80s up until can't quite remember when I mistakenly gave it away. I got a real longing for it this year and searching "Laura Ashley black riding coat" on eBay brought up the exact same coat. Miraculously although the one I had was an 8 and the one on eBay was a 14 (gone are my day's of being an 8)

I have no idea how the seller came to have a large collection of as good as new Laura Ashley classics, I'm just glad she did. The coat is as beautiful as I remembered.

I found Vinted extremely messy with clothes badly displayed compared to eBay.

DuchessOfSausage · 27/08/2022 13:20

I found Vinted messy too.

vinted returns for bad descriptions don't seem so good a knee length skirt arrived yesterday which was 32" that would be well below knee lebvel even if 6'
on ebay seller would have needed to send return label

Rainmakerof69 · 27/08/2022 13:28

I look for items with a decent decription, unless it's super cheap then I'll take a chance.
I've had less luck with jeans (had to re-ebay), I think you really need the waist and rise measurement to know if they will fit.

chillipenguin · 27/08/2022 13:38

Very specific but if you like Cath Kidston check out misspellings. Also works for Charlotte Tilbury

DuchessOfSausage · 27/08/2022 13:39

Yes, unless it's a well-known style. Jeans vary a lot and I've re-ebayed a few. Ones like 501s will sell but more obscure ones won't.

I buy jeans from charity shops. They are usually very cheap even if they are premium brands. I'll generally fit into my usual size, if not, I'll either return them or ebay them.
