Has your hair got much darker as you have got older?

My hair was mousy blonde when I was young and I have highlighted it since my mid-teens. I am now in my 50s and my hair is dark brown (roots and underneath) and I am hardly grey at all, just a few at the hairline.

During lockdown lots of my friends grew out their grey and it merged into the blonde and now they look great. My hair is still bleached blonde with dark roots and I am ready to dye it dark all over and see what happens.

Wondering if anyone else is the same and did you go blonde or dark?

If you’re greying you’re way better going lighter than darker. As you age, your skin tone also changes in line with the grey hair. I’ve genuinely never seen anyone who’s going grey look better dying it darker.

I was blonde as a child and started highlighting in my mid teens as it got naturally darker. Still doing it now as I’m greying and actually want the grey to hurry up and come in to cut down the darkness of my roots!

Me!

I was having blonde highlights for years but recently my roots have been almost black. My hairdresser confirmed that my hair is getting darker!

The roots against my highlights look awful so in the process of going dark today. Have just had the "filler" done.

I'm a bit scared, it's red / pink and makes my skin look AWFUL. I'm cool toned with very blue eyes.

I'm hoping that when it's chocolatey and glossy it'll look nice though.

I have barely any greys but this can change quickly so am open to the fact I won't be dark haired for long. Just going to enjoy it while I can :)

Yes, my hair has gone much, much darker as I’ve aged. I don’t highlight my hair though so roots aren’t an issue.

No. I was blonde as a baby but my hair had gone dark brown by the time I was two and it's still the same colour in middle age, apart from where it's gone grey of course.

Greengreengrassbluebluesky · 22/08/2022 17:35

Not just me then! I am going to try going dark as I don’t think I can keep up with the blonde forever more. Then review it if I start to go grey. Hopefully a bit cheaper to maintain too.

Mine has got lighter. Looks pretty pale blonde now but it's because I've got white hairs coming through.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/08/2022 19:02

Yes, mine was a horrible mid brown till I was early twenties and now people describe it as black.

When I put too much fake tan on people think I’m Asian and ask where I’m from. Sutton Coldfield is not the expected answer.

I was white blonde / flaxen until the age of six, then my hair gradually darkened to a mid blonde by the time I was 18. so i started getting highlights/foils. Its now going grey so I dont have roots anymore which is a bonus.

Friends have gone from blonde to dark during lockdown though and while their hair looks healthier, it does age them as it casts shadows on their faces. That could be the hair style rather than the hair though.

Me too, just in the last few years really. I am in my fifties. I did have light brown to dark blonde hair, but now it is mid brown I would say. Also v few greys, maybe the melanin has upped and I will suddenly run out and go white ?

TheOGCCL · 22/08/2022 23:06

Mine has definitely darkened, nature’s way of ensuring my greys show up properly.

My hair was Ash blonde till about 35. Now it's a very dark blonde. Goes very blonde in the sun. It's gone much oilier too.

Not sure what I'll do when it goes grey.

AllLopsided · 22/08/2022 23:15

Mine got lighter! Only a little though - I started nearly black and now half dark brown, half grey. I have it coloured because I don't think the grey suits me. My mum and brother were both white blond as children though and gradually turned to dark brown as they got older.

Definitely, I was mouse verging on strawberry blonde. I'm be dark golden blond verging on light brown. I'm going silver now as my grays are almost sparkly . When I had long hair the greys were nearly hidden but now it's short a lot more grey shows. I'm going pink.
