New haircut - bad haircut or bad with change?

Hi all,

had my hair cut today, but I don’t know how I feel about it! I’m new to the area so although they had good reviews, I don’t have any personal recommendations.

my hair is very frizzy underneath and wavy on top. I previously had layers, and I asked for 2-3 inches off the length, up to about where the layers were, and then some long layers cut in and some face framing. I’m not debating that she’s done what I asked for, but the layers seem a lot shorter than anticipated. Because of my hair texture, they spring up a lot - which is why I wanted long layers. Rather than it adding some texture at the bottom, they now seem to create a flicky sort of shelf halfway down my head!

Im fairly chilled and ‘it’s hair, it’ll grow back’ but I’m away next weekend and could really do without having to take loads of hair tools. Does anyone have any words of wisdom / advice / etc for me please?

Ive included photos of how it looked before (that photo is about nine months old but it was broadly the same), how it looked when she had straightened it, and a photo of how it looks now I’ve washed it and air dried it. I don’t think my hair looks great straight at the best of times so I can never make my mind up on a haircut until after I’ve washed it and let it air dry!

It's not a particularly even cut but it seems to be sitting nicely with its natural. Wave.

EmergencyHepNeeded · 20/08/2022 23:23

Can you just clarify? Photo one is from a few months ago, photo two is what the hairdresser did and photo three is now, after you blow dried it?

The first photo looks brilliant and the third photo looks great but I prefer the hair to be longer.

Yes - it looks nice in the first and third photos, not very good straightened.

dizzyupthegirl86 · 20/08/2022 23:28

Thank you - I was expecting ‘yes that looks awful’ so you’ve made me feel better already!

@EmergencyHepNeeded That’s all correct. Picture one is how it looks with the sort of long layers I like, I basically wanted THAT but a bit shorter!

It probably looks a bit uneven because I’ve been messing around with the parting trying to find a way in which I like it more. I like the natural wave in my hair, but it always means short layers look terrible on me.

It looks great in picture 1. I don't think it needs to be shorter.

EmergencyHepNeeded · 20/08/2022 23:43

Picture one is by far the best. Picture three looks great but I would grow it until it's back to picture one standards!

Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 20/08/2022 23:56

I too have hair that is frizzy/wavy/ springs up. The layers in the new cut are shorter. If you don't straighten it you will get the shelf effect. I straighten mine as I don't like the shelf. You don't have to do it as robustly as picture 2.

milkyaqua · 21/08/2022 00:19

It looked so much nicer before. Straightened, it looks like a bad haircut. Wavy, it isn't so bad, but is a very frumpy cut. My advice would be: let it grow out, and learn to cut your own hair - when it gets a bit frizzy - off YouTube. But most hairdressers would be able to manage a better, more attractive cut for you than that.

helloagainsun · 21/08/2022 10:24

I think it looks nice wavy in pic 3. It will soon grow back. I have a similar wave in my hair. I would leave the layers at the front to grow out and just get a little trim off the ends in about 9 weeks time or whenever the ends look dry.

It's a lovely colour OP.

ReviewingTheSituation · 21/08/2022 10:32

I think it looks lovely in pic 3. Pic 1 is good too, if you like long hair, but I think pic 3is equally as nice.
Pic 2 is not good, but maybe she wanted to straighten it to help get the best cut? You don't need to straighten it yourself on a daily basis for sure!

dizzyupthegirl86 · 21/08/2022 13:51

Thank you all, you’ve made me feel so much better! I think it IS just the fact that it’s so different that’s made me unsure.
it’s my natural colour, I used to be blonde and keep thinking about going back but every hairdresser tells me I shouldn’t!

It still feels very short to me, but I’m going to play around later with straighteners and maybe try putting some loose waves in, I think the style might suit that.

I do feel like I need to add that picture two was after I’d driven home with windows down in 24 degrees so it did look much better before I left the salon!

I agree with others, picture 1 is the best, but it looks good in picture 3 as well. Picture 2 I do not think looks good so I wouldn't bother straightening it if I were you.

dizzyupthegirl86 · 21/08/2022 14:35

Five minutes (ish) with straighteners and some (read : a little bit too much) texture spray, and I don’t hate it!

I think it looks lovely! Especially in your just posted photo, bouncy and full of body. X

Swannning · 21/08/2022 20:24

Oh I love the latest pic

Greengreengrassbluebluesky · 21/08/2022 20:27

It looks lovely in that last pic. I wish I could style my hair like that.

Johnnysgirl · 21/08/2022 20:52

Oh yeah, that is lovely, op.

milkyaqua · 22/08/2022 00:30

Oh, yes, much better. You have lovely hair.

Discwriter · 22/08/2022 00:37

You look great OP! I'd love to have hair like yours!

thinkfast · 22/08/2022 01:07

It looks like you've had much more than 2/3 inches off OP. But as you say it will grow. It looks better how you've styled it in picture 4, but I preferred it before the cut. Sorry.

esteemsports · 22/08/2022 01:12

I don't think you have anything to worry about. It looks shiny and healthy.
