School shoes and bag for year 8 DD

DD will be 13 in the autumn and is about to start year 8. She doesn't really know what shoes and bag will be "right", so I'd like to ask for some advice on her behalf.

Shoes: She has size 8 feet, usually wears trousers, doesn't like chunky shoes, and the school has a fairly strict policy: must be all black with no embellishments, must have a leather-like finish (i.e., no canvas, no suede, no patent), and they can't look like trainers, boots or DMs. She had Clarks Scala brogues last year, and regretted the choice ("ugly"). She doesn't want Mary Janes (they don't look right with trousers). We may go for the Clarks lace up unisex shoes, but if anyone can provide inspiration for anything else, we would be very grateful.

Bag: She had a plain black (school policy) backpack last year, but now wants a fabric tote bag. I would rather she had something that would provide its contents with some protection from the weather, but she is more concerned about fitting in... Are tote bags really the done thing this year?

I know that some people will just say that I should simply tell her what to wear/carry, but I am trying to encourage her to assert herself so would like to give her options to choose from as a starting point. (And I have horrible memories of seriously ugly brown brogues from starting high school at 11!)

My son is going into yr 8. I've bought him an Under Armour backpack (Hustle Pro) as it's the only one I could find that's big enough to carry his books, PE kit and lunch! And it was reduced on the UA website. Not sure if that helps though if she wants a tote bag!

Thank you. Will bear in mind if she changes her mind!

Totes were the done thing when my dd was that age. So impracticable but I just went with the flow.

What are her friends getting?

RunnyPaint · 18/08/2022 17:13

She says some of her friends will have tote bags, but she doesn't want to ask in case she ends up being called copy-cat (this age is such a mine-field).

Thank you, @MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay. I like them, but she just pulled a face 🙄

They always do, I'll play my trump card then.

If it's in UO, it's in.

Also 15% off if you order through the app.

That last message was about the Hamble Oaks😀The bag has to be a plain dark colour with no obvious logos according to the school's published policy (which is inconsistently enforced). I'll have more of a look at Asos.

@MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay Thank you for that UO link. I was only vaguely aware of that brand/shop. I now recognise the logo of DD's friend's bag. I'll show DD!

Have a look at their shoes too. Even if she doesn't 'like like' any at least it gives you a clue about what's fashionable at the moment.

My daughter has ones like these, she hates 'clumpy' shoes but has narrow feet so needs something that laces

RunnyPaint · 18/08/2022 18:07

@Leafblow thanks, they seem to match what DD has asked for, but are too similar to the ones she had last year. I think it's the punched detailing that she doesn't like with brogues. I had forgotten about Wynsors, though, and there is one nearby so we could try there. Thank you!
