Black dresses for funeral (in the heat)

cynthiasrevels · 13/08/2022 14:17

I have found myself having to attend two funerals this month, both very close relatives/friends. My wardrobe of black clothes is limited to clothes completely inappropriate for the occasion or the heat (think wool dresses/strappy tops or boiler style jump suits). Any thoughts of where I might find some sober (black, I assume?) clothes that won't be unbearably hot? I'm assuming a wrap dress or similar would be best? It feels so stupidly frivolous to be concerned about this.

Are you sure dress will be black. Not all funerals follow that protocol

RainbowSlaw · 13/08/2022 14:25

We ended up at a funeral in last months heat wave.

I went for a dress not dissimilar to these and it was manageable.

Others also went for black lineny trousers, or midi/maxi skirts in subdued colours.

Being too hot inside a church felt quite odd!

Unfortunately been to several funerals recently.
Unheard of for July/Aug
Still got two more to attend.

People I know of have been using Next online. As of about 3 weeks ago, there were several styles in black to choose from.

Got a lovely black full length dress in White Company.

Navy or grey also fine for a formal funeral if you find something more suitable

I went to a funeral on a hot sunny day. I just remember a lot of black & white, navy & white, grey & white... I wore a black linen skirt and grey & white top and sandals.

tLook st the ME+EM sale. They had a range of summer dresses in black, all of which could give you long term wear or re-saleability.

It isn't frivolous to be concerned about it - a funeral is a time when it is important to be dressed appropriately and not a time to be "doing your own thing".

I like both the Next dresses and the M&S one.

Not really any of the Fat Face ones.

The Next and M&S ones are ones you can just keep in your wardrobe just as your 'funeral dress' - not too hot for this weather but easy to add tights, coat etc if needed in the Winter.

I am sorry for your losses. How sad to have to go to two in a month.

Thank you SO much lovely mumsnetters. I really love the first Next dress, the M&S dress, and, as the last poster suggests, they'd be wearable again. I would never have thought to look at Fat Face. Thanks also for all of the other really helpful suggestions about what might be acceptable in terms of colours. It's been hard to be focussed.

I noticed some very simple linen dresses in asda that might suit.
Sorry to hear your sad news.

Proudofeveryone · 14/08/2022 09:09

I wore a black and white spotted dress from Asda. Cap sleeve and I can wear again.
And this was to MIL funeral.
